4478.0. "Games/Demos available on the net" by VISA::ANDREASSON (Cogito, ergo am) Thu Jan 31 1991 08:34

Hi all Amiga-fans,

I've just bought an Amiga 500, so I am discovering the world of micros,
(though not the world of minis, since I started with RSX and VMS some ten years
 ago.)

Unfortunately, looking through this notes file, AND the directory pointers
given, it seems next to impossible to get an idea of what is available through
the "public net" and directories on Easynet. There is seldomly anything but a
cryptic file name out of thousands of file names to let you guess what is
behind zwprthsg.zwp.

>>I have a suggestion: Those of you giving out directory pointers, PLEASE
put a seperate file in you directory, with a brief explanation of what each
file contains, and in what format it is.

(There seems to exist I don't know how many ways of compressing/decompressing
files, so it would also be nice to know at least the *name* of the Decompressor)

Another confusing area for a micro-beginner, like me, is the notion of public
domain, and the policy of making a certain game available. It seems that
there basically exists only demo (advertisement!) versions of the type of
games that interest me, 'real-time' games with high-quality graphics, animation
and sound - is that true?

Anyway, I would be very happy if someone could give me a listing of games they
know of with:

	- game name
	- short description
	- pointer to location /or "can only be purchased"

Many thanks beforehand.

As a fairly recent entry to the net (about five months), I sympathize with
your confusion. One problem is the somewhat nebulous connection between this
conference and the various directories/tools on the net for upload and download.
I've suggested a summary note for these topics, but apparently it's not been
implemented as of yet. I personally don't know the environment well enough to
initiate it.

The directories I'm aware of are:

TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]
TAPE:USER2:[AMIGA...]
WJG::AMIGA:
CRISTA""::AMIGA:

The compression types are self-documenting, keyed to the filetype:

.LZH = LHARC
.ARC = ARC
.ZOO = ZOO
.SH = SHAR

Various tools for uploading, downloading, and compression/decompression are in
TAPE::USER2:[AMIGA.TOOLS]. I'm on a VMS system, so I can't speak for the Ultrix
side.

As far as games go, I don't do much in that area, but I have a few that I know
are good (IMHO): Amoeba and StarTrek (the one by Jimbo Barber) are the only ones
which come to mind, but I've seen others praised in this conference.

Welcome to the conference, and good luck with your concerns.

Cheers,
	Bob
4478.2A small library....COMICS::HOGGANNo, I am not kidding !!!Thu Jan 31 1991 10:1617
    Hi,

    There is a fairly small set of public domain/shareware disks called
    FRED FISH disks. The gent who looks after this on the net has prepared
    a two-volume catalogue which does just as you ask - gives info on each
    program on the disk. To get hold of this thin tome, simply type :

    copy tape::user2:[amiga]ff_cat_v1.ps *.*
    copy tape::user2:[upload]ff_cat_v2.ps *.*

    These can be printed on a postscript printer and once bound, will grace
    any bookshelf...

    Happy hunting,

    Dave.

    A great game on a FF is Dragon Cave.

    somewhere.

One of my favorite computer games is free. It's LARN, from Fish Disk 63.
The game is similar to Rogue, Hack, and Moria, but is far more playable.
The game has been pretty heavily Amiga-ized: instead of ASCII character
graphics, the game uses 8 (or 16?) color tiny pictures of the monsters,
treasure, and items in the dungeon. The game has menus and allows you
to click and drag with the mouse to move your character.

A lot of the fun of the game is figuring out the strategy to use in dealing
with the monsters in the game. Most of the monsters have special powers,
which you can neutralize with the right spells, potions, or scrolls.
4478.10DM Demo - where?VISA::ANDREASSONCogito, ergo amMon Feb 25 1991 09:297
Thanks all for your answers. I 've seen the big note about Dungeon Master,
(note 1874), in this notes file. Do you know if the demo is still available
somewhere on the net? Does the DEMO need 1Meg, or is it just the REAL DM that
needs 1Meg?
