4454.0. "Amiga spotted on NASA Select" by SAUTER::SAUTER (John Sauter) Sun Jan 27 1991 18:33

I was scanning through the satellite feeds, looking for something from
Saudi Arabia when I spotted an Amiga screen. On checking the channel I
discovered that it was from NASA select, which is Satcom 2R, channel
    13.

The Amiga appears to have been booted into something called PRO VIDEO
CGI, copyrighted 1986 and 1987 by Jeff Karline. Based on what I can
see on the screen it supports only a single disk and 512K of memory
under AmigaDOS 1.1, but supports more memory and disk under AmigaDOS
    1.2. No references to 1.3 or 2.0.

At the bottom of the screen it complains that it can't open EXECUTE's
workfile on :T, and announces a return code of 20. I suspect something
went wrong when it was rebooting after a power failure. NASA Select
normally only sends program material on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so
the boot screen may be there for several days!

Does anybody know what this package is, or how NASA Select uses it?
This goof on their part could generate publicity for the Amiga among
    technical types.

John, how do you get access to this sort of stuff? Do you have a
satellite dish? This doesn't sound like cable, but it sounds like
fun!

Yes, I have a satellite dish. I got it after getting tired of waiting
for the local cable company to reach my street. I wouldn't trade it
for cable, even now, because of such things as NASA Select and the
    direct feeds from Saudi Arabia.

It sounds like an older version of Pro Video Gold. This program is a
character generation program that allows interactive control of the
screens. It can be used with a genlock to title pictures that are
    broadcast.

Bill,

I agree, it does sound like Pro Video Gold. It is in wide use by alot of TV
stations. My own cable station, uses it to play the listings and times of
upcoming shows, as well as do the bulletin board advertising. I found this out
the same way as in .1. Turned on the TV one night and was going to check the
listings when I discovered 'TASK HELD -- FINISH ALL WORK...' It was really
funny, and it stayed there for almost a week.

Thanks for the reference. It did appear to be genlocked, since there
was a NASA logo under the AmigaDOS screen.
