4437.0. "TAPE is being worked on ..." by ELWOOD::PETERS () Fri Jan 18 1991 18:09

I'm still working on TAPE. I'm having a number of problems

1. TAPE is a VAX 3500 that is used as the boot node for a few
workstations. It is not a large machine. Many of the crashes
have been caused by the system running out of resources.
Today the system had 15 FAL processes running at a time.
PLEASE do not start multiple copy or ftsv connections at one
time. We ran out of process slots. I have increased the process
slots, but there are only about 20 free slots.

2. The disk that has the AMIGA software is getting errors. I'm
working to get it replaced.

3. The AMIGA PD software is running out of disk space. The current
disk is a RA81 with nothing on it except the AMIGA area. The
disk has about 100,000 blocks free ( about 50 MB out of 450 MB ).
I may need to split the Amiga area over two disks or find a
bigger disk. So expect the disk name to change.

4. I will be doing some VMS upgrades and other system operations
next week. So if you can't connect to TAPE try again later.

4437.1The disk is moving ...ELWOOD::PETERSThu Jan 31 1991 15:3124

TAPE is starting to work better.

1. TAPE is now running VMS 5.4 . I will be upgrading to VMS5.4-2
on Monday Feb 4th.

2. The Network links to TAPE have been limited to 20 FAL processes.
This could be raised as time goes on.

3. The AMIGA files are moving... I have found a RA82 to move the
Amiga software to. The new disk is AMIGA:

TAPE::AMIGA:[UPLOAD]
TAPE::AMIGA:[AMIGA]

This disk is dedicated to Amiga software. The structure of the
[AMIGA] directories might change ( if I have time ). The new disk
will be available Friday Feb 1, 1991.

VMS V5.4-2? You mean V5.4-1 or -1A, don't you?

Just curious...

I seem to be having problems with Tape::, I get insufficient privs or file
protection when trying to copy handshake off of 'Tape::amiga:[upload].

4437.4Protection fix is commingELWOOD::PETERSFri Feb 01 1991 17:0611

I'm fixing the protection problem.

I did mean VMS 5.4-2 . TAPE:: is an internal field test site
for this version of VMS. The system has been set-up with a Q-bus
to SCSI adapter, TLZ04 ( DAT ), TZK10 ( QIC ) and RRD42 ( CDROM ).
So that we can test new device support in VMS 5.4-2.

Please use Amiga:[upload] for new software.

Tape:: is up and stable. The Amiga software is now on AMIGA:
and I have fixed protection problems. If there are any more problems
send mail to ELWOOD::PETERS.

4437.8moving file around on TAPE::ELWOOD::PETERSFri Mar 01 1991 17:0516

Wayne Oakley has LHARCed the old fish disks and uploaded them
to TAPE:: . I have replaced the old archives with these new copies.
So, all the fish disks are now in the same format. There are a few
more disks to be replaced, but we are very close to having a full
set.

I have also started to move files out of upload and into
[amiga...] directories. I'm also working on the [amiga...]
directory structure. I hope this will help people find and identify
files.

THANKS!

I'll check em out as soon as I get some time...
4437.10ELWOOD::PETERSSat Jun 08 1991 11:3311

TAPE:: suffered from a building wide power problem Friday. It had
some network problems when it was reboote. These have been fixed.

Now for the bad news. FAL access to tape is slowing our system
down. Something needs to be done to fix this. I'll let you know what's
going to happen.

4437.11Maybe set MAXJOBS on FAL server account?BOMBE::MOOREAmiga: Where 'multimedia' REALLY beganSun Jun 09 1991 02:526
Gee, Steve, it must be somebody else's fault. Everybody *knows* there
aren't enough Amiga owners around to amount to anything....

;^)

4437.12Publish your work hours and time zone??CSC32::A_ANDERSONDTN 592-4170 NSU/VAXSun Jun 09 1991 13:2214
You can also set up a permanent FAL server process for the Fal$server
account to reduce process startup overhead. Assuming the time between
copy request are more than the default 5 minutes, and the added expense
of a permanent process for FAL is cost effective.

Or just limit copies to after normal Business hours. The IBM PD side
has done that in the past. Just publish you systems normal or peak
business hours and time zone. We are all adults we should be able to
control our PD wants till after hours. If we do not control ourselves
someone will have to do it for us.

My opinion

Sorry, to ask this here, but is there any system like Tape:: dealing
with MSDOS, I've checked the IBMPC notes conferences (4000-*) for
upload&download, but nothing ...

I would like to thanks all the people in this conference for their
usefull notes & the people providing new programs on Tape::
And most of the thanks goes to Steve Peter (& his team, if such
team exist) for his huge work on Tape.
