    I have the opportunity of possibility of using a RD54. Before doing so
    I need some help.
    Can someone help with the formatting I should use for the partitions.
    All the information you have would be appreciated.
    Iam using an amiga 1000 with the WEDGE controller. At present I have
    a RD53.
    Ihave read the notes but still need HELLLLP.

    Thanks in advancef

4434.2Still looking for RD54 helpPOLAR::RIDGETue Jan 29 1991 08:0161
    I have done some more playing around but am still trouble.
    here is where Iam at.

    Iam using an Amiga 1000 with wb 1.3
    2Meg of addition memory
    additional 3 1/2 drive
    Wedge interface to the disk controller

    1) I have purchased a CTC 5160x disk controller
    2) I used the connectors supplied with the board
    3) fmt parms looks like this
       Unit = 0
       Interleave =4
       Hi CYC =1024
       Write Precomp = 1024
       Write Current = 0
       Heads = 15
       ECClength =11
       Sectors = 26
       Seekrate = 5
       Park = 0

    The mount list looks like this for DH??
      Device = billsdisk.device
      filesystem = l:FastFileSystem
      Unit = 0
      flags = 0
      Surfaces =15
      Blocks Per track = 26
      Reserved = 2
      Interleave = 0
      Lowcyl = 0 ; hicyl = 400
      Buffers = 30
      Globvec = 1
      BufMemType = 0
      MaxTransfer = 128
      Mount =1
      DosType = 0x444F5301
      Stacksize =4000

    DH1 and DH 2 are identical secept for the lo/hicyl
    DH1 = 401-800
    dh2 = 801-1024

    When I do the mount of DH0 the front light flicks on once (not twice)
    Iam able to do the fmt 0 commands without any problems. the light
    goes on and off as it seems to be checking the drive out.

    But as soon as I do the following command:

    FORMAT DRIVE DH0: NAME "DH0"
    it asks me to insert the disk (ok)
    message about destroying all data and am I sure >(something like that
    Once I complete the questions
    it says starting
    displays formatting cyl 1, 399 to go (something like that)
    the light on the drive does not come on and I get right
    back to the completed and > prompt.

    CAN ANYONE HELP.   PLEASE
4434.3Just a toughtMQOFS::DESROSIERSLets procrastinate....tomorrowTue Jan 29 1991 11:567
    I tought the RD54 only had 17 sectors!!!( NON-RLL drive)
    Unless your controller is RLL of course, but then you may be
    asking for trouble as the surface may not be up to the task of
    supporting that many sectors.

Right, it depends on the controller. The RQDX3 (Microvax) controller uses
18 sectors, but one is reserved for bad block replacement (HIBBR).

Not sure if RD54 can hack RLL, but it's worth a try!

    Is there someone I can contact to find out if an RLL controller could
    be used on a RD54??

    The introduction of the controller says "This easy to install RLL hard
    disk contoller can control 2 sST 506 type industry standard 3 1/5 or 5
    1/4 winchester LRR disk drives under IBM PC DOS ver 2.0 or later IBM
    PC/XT or COMPATABLE.
4434.6RLL controller with RD54 BAD BLOCKSPOLAR::RIDGETue Mar 19 1991 16:0014
    I have just received a reply from the people who built the wedge for
    the 1000. Although the wedge itselve cannot be used he thought that
    any RLL controller would do. He has been able to format the drive
    set up partitions and run software. But, he says that he is having
    problems in assigning bad blocks. apparently the amiga formatter will
    not handle it. He does not know why at this point and has not had the
    time to check out the code. He also says that there is a manual,
    painful way to assign bad blocks.
    Can anyone add any comments or advice.
    I sure would like to use this drive.

    Thanks in advance
