4428.0. "A3000 upgrade" by TROA09::ITHOMSON () Mon Jan 14 1991 13:57

    Hi guys,
        I have a question, is it possible to upgrade an Amiga 2000HD
    to a A3000, and if so what is the approximate cost. Also is it
    possible to upgrade to a UNIX box, or I have to sell what I have and
    then by the new box.

    Thanx.

I haven't heard of any 2000 -> 3000 trade up offers...

Your 2000HD will need an MMU to run Unix (like an A2620 or preferably an A2630)
and lots of RAM (at least 5MB but probably more like 8) and a tape drive.

You will need lots of $$$ :-)

4428.2MMU on coprocessor card/bus mastersKALVIN::VISSERTue Jan 15 1991 09:578
    this might be a stupid comment, so please forgive...

    How can an MMU on a coprocessor card work? Doesn't the MMU have to be
    between _all_ bus masters and the physical memory? I could see it
    working if the cpu was the only bus master, and the custom chips
    accessed chip ram only, but what about plug-in cards that DMA?

    I don't have answers specific to the Amiga, but there have been DEC
    systems which had an MMU in the processor but not the I/O channels.
    On those systems the supervisor would convert the virtual address
    specified by the user program into a physical address for use by
    the channel.
