4414.0. "IFF/PS ??" by OTIGER::R_CURTIS (There is madness to my method..) Tue Jan 08 1991 11:55

    I have some general questions about this Amiga/IFF-to-Postscript
    conversion and printing business. I have the IFF2PS20 utility for the
    A500 and I have CLAZ 2.0 running on the VAX in our office. I tried
    using CLAZ to convert a file I uploaded, it seemed to work, I got the
    'success' message at the end. If I send that file to a PS printer, all
    I get is the text, not the picture. I mean, it appears to just do an
    ASCII dump of the contents of the file, which has the Postscript
    commands embedded in it. It was a color picture I uploaded, so do I
    need to adjust the palette for B/W or what ? If I use IFF2PS20 and
    upload that file/print it, would that work ? I did not use any switches
    with CLAZ and I tried 2 different printers, so I'm doing something
    wrong... Has anyone had success with this type of operation ? My main
    objective is just to get graphic dumps. I used ZMODEM to upload the
    file, if that makes any significance. I noticed after the Postscript
    commands, there are quite a number of lines of 0's, then various number
    patterns, which I guess is the actual file pattern. Not sure if that is
    valid or not.

    Any responses would be appreciated, thanks.

4414.1PS printer?TLE::TLET8::ASHFORTHTue Jan 08 1991 11:5915
I don't mean this to be insulting, but are you using a PostScript printer?
The result you mention is consistent with sending a PS file to a non-PS
printer (LN03+, for instance).

If you *are* using a PS printer, are you including the qualifer

/PARAM=(DATA=POSTSCRIPT)

in your "print" command? Even for a PS printer, the print queue setup may be
sending the ASCII text by default.

Good luck.

Cheers,

    Yes, I used the /param=data=postscript,and it only printed the header
    and trailer, there was a message about an offending command of some
    sort, which I don't have in front of me. Anyway, let me ask this..if
    one wanted to print an AMIGA-generated picture/iff file on a Postscript
    printer, what commands/software would I use on the Amiga to convert
    the file to valid Postscript format ?
4414.3IFF2PS works for meCSC32::A_ANDERSONDTN 592-4170 NSU/VAXWed Jan 09 1991 19:2913
          I have had good results from using IFF2PS to convert an IFF
    picture to a grey scale post script format then send it directly to the
    Post script queue LPS40. I have also in the past sent the file to a
    LN03 script printer using a Rainbow terminal emulator ASCII send
    feature. (The LN03 took for ever) Most of the pictures were digitized
    from Digi View and modified with Deluxe PhotoLab. In one case it was
    the output from C-Light. I just used Lharc to reduce the file size
    uploaded and Un-lharced it on the VAX.

    IFF2PS is on the Net I downloaded it a little over a year ago.

I haven't used it, but I've seen "CLAZ" around for quite a while for the same
purpose as IFF2PS. Anyone used both and have an opinion on the comparative
merits of each?
4414.5Should I care with WW3 around the corner??GIDDAY::MORANI'm not bad-I'm just drawn that way!Thu Jan 10 1991 16:4813
    By far the best is IFF2PS. Not only is the Postscript images that it
    generates are in better quality and in landscape mode (by default) but
    it seems a lot more stable than CLAZ.

    As I mentioned in an earlier note I have had a few problems with CLAZ,
    mainly with HAM IFF's created by GIF2IFF. The programs does a (soft)
    bug check and drops out.

    This is not a flame session or a reply to abuse these programs. I think
    that they are all excellent - I am just pointing out a few of the
    porblems that I found in the use of them.
