4408.0. "need driver for Citizen GSX140" by MLTVAX::HOSFORD () Mon Jan 07 1991 18:20

    I am looking for a print driver for a Citizen GSX140 24 pin color
    printer. If I cant find one the Epson LQ2500 or the Epson LQ2550
    will be close.

    These drivers may be shiping on Word Perfect V5.1, or with some
    other software packeges. I only need the print drivers.

    					Thanks

4408.1Using EpsonQ for now SALEM::LEIMBERGERTue Jan 08 1991 05:5220
    The Epson Q driver that is on the extras disk is what I use. This has
    been the driver that almost everyone I talk to uses with the GSX140.
    There is a modified driver here on the net somewhere called EpsonQ+.
    I tried it and did not end up using it. The problem seems to be that
    the GSX140 can do 360 x360 res,while the Epson driver will do
    360 x 180(or 180 x 360 can't remember). The + driver did 360 x 360 but
    I did not like the results of the double pass on the GSX. I don't know
    what the specs are on the LQ2550 so I,m not sure what it will by you
    > other software packeges I only need the drivers.
    	FWIW many of the print drivers are not in the PD,and thus should
    not be loaded to the net. Many companies sell them as options,or will
    develop one on request. This of course is a gray area. An example is
    the demo for Pagestream. I seem to remember that it had a batch of
    drivers with it, you could check them out. I really don't know if they
    are different, or if they were just renamed to suit the printers. a
    quick look would tell you this. If you find something let me know.
    Meanwhile I am getting by with the EpsonQ. Never print a lot at home
    so it hasen't been a priority. I guess it's about time to rag on
    Citizen for a driver.(maybe if a bunch of us called....)

4408.2Bug Commodore for a new driver...LEDDEV::GERBERFor more info, call: 800/555-1212Tue Jan 08 1991 09:2013
    Instead of ragging on Citizen for the driver, maybe we should impress
    Commodore with the fact that a lot of us now have this printer and
    would like an enhanced driver.

    The problem with going to the h/w manufacturer is that they don't have
    the expertise (most likely), but Commodoredoes have the EpsonQ driver
    to start with.

    As for the printer itself, try a letter quality font with real bond
    paper through the single sheet feeder, it looks better than a lot of
    the new typewriters that are being made.

    Anyone printing color from their GSX140? If so, what is your opinion
    on the color output?

    	I imagine all of us are printing color on the GSX. I like it quite
    a bit. The output is not as crisp as say the paintjet,but I have seen
    pics that are almost this good. This of course depends on the ribbon
    condition etc. The paintjet also has the overhead of ink,and special
    paper to consider. I think the GSX will give as good a color output
    as any 24pin ribbon combination under $500.00 . This has always been
    the weak link on any computer system. I feel the quality is good enough
    to use for proofing at least. ( thats all the paintjet is good for
    also) I have been watching some paintjet pics fade away on the office
    wall, this is not a problem(least not yet) with the GSX. If you want
    color in the sense of text,and forms the output is excellent.

I think a problem with a driver supporting the 360X360 mode is that it must
support multiple pass printing. This means there is a good chance the ribbon
can get color contamination from the previous pass(es) on the same print line.

As for bugging commodore, why not write one. The specs and prototypes are
readily available from Commodore and in the RKM's. The RKM examples are
available in electronic form from Fred Fish (about disk 350 as I recall) and
one of the examples is a printer driver.

4408.6CLO::COBURNGrowing older, but not up...Wed Jan 09 1991 19:199
    I received a GSX-140 w/ color for Christmas and I like it. The color
    printing (using EPSONQ) is quite good (a little darker than the screen,
    but that is expected). I tried the EpsonQPlus and rejected it as well -
    the 360X180 was good enough.

    SOmeone suggested the NEC driver but it doesn't work as well as the
    EpsonQ on the Citizen.

    Hello Peter,

    I used the Epson LQ25xx series driver that was included on the Amiga
    Extras/Printer Driver disk for WB 1.3.1. It worked well emulating
    color as well as all other needed codes for my GSX-140.

    If you have any further questions, you're welcome to reach me via
    my bbs @408-267-2335 (Driven Element -Supporting Amiga/Amateur Radio).
    This would be a bit more reliable than awaiting a reply from ME here
    since I'm on the road a lot and don't get to check in often.

    Good luck!
