| You should have received a RAM test diagnostic floppy with your A590.
It provides enough information to isolate the defective chip. If you can't
find it, you could configure down to 1 MB of A590 ram and try different chips.

4403.2 | Same problem-was disk controller | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Mon Jan 07 1991 10:30 | 9 |
| I had the same problem when I upgraded memory on my 2058 card in the
2000. I was running with 2meg on the card,no problems. Then I added
another 2 meg,and got random gurus. However I would get a guru every
time I tried to duplicate a drawer with WorkBench. I checked all my
ram, no problems. The real problem was my GVP controller. I called an
got an updated set of pals from GVP,and have been rock steady ever
since. I realize you do not have the GVP, but felt you could benefit
from my experiance. (I also first looked at the ram chips)

| Thanks for replying so far, re. 1, how do I use this test Ram disk, I
loaded it after booting from the 590 instal disk but only saw the CLI
window (I must add I have all the user books in German and am
struggling to translate as I go! the CLI learning process will happen
after I buy an english edition in UK later this month!
What command must I give in at the CLI prompt to test the RAM?

| I don't remember the command. I'll look it up when I get home tonight.
As I recall, you just run the program that is in the root directory. Try doing
a DIR. If there is a program there called "ramtest" or something like that, run
it.
Your problem sounds a lot like a bad memory chip to me.

Try booting from the RAM test disk. It will launch directly into the
test and prompt you for whatever it needs.

| Back agin and a happy chappy (well almost!) Thanks for all your help,
re.6 you were right of course, booting from the Test Ram disk was the
answer [ I was unsure as the 590 Setup disk also had Ram Test written
on it but no software IN it to do so and booting from that did nothing
for me naturally!]
So what was it? One chip in the 1MEG area was seated flat in the
socket but a little off to one side (I mean a little!), the test
picked it up ,I reaseated it and bungiejump, we are in business!! many
thanks to you all and Sorin in Belgium for helping a new comer through
the hoops...........I still can't find any reference [my German is not
so bad!] to this test software in the 590 or 500 manuals!
My US bought Deluxe Video III still Gurus with 00000003. 00251BB0
an addressing problem I think but damned if I know why, the rest of the
world hasn't screamed yet about this.......makes the program unusable!!
cheers and thanks fjeff
