4389.1 | Old A2000?
| COMICS::HOGGAN | No, I am not kidding !!! | Wed Jan 02 1991 09:05 | 7 |
| Hi,
Does this work with the old 'Rectangular' Agnus chip ?
Dave.

re .1
The MEG-A-RAM ( chip RAM Board ) requires that you remove your
1 MB Fat Agnus and put a new ( Square ) 2 MB Super Agnus on the
expansion board. The expansion board plugs into the Agnus socket.
The Super Agnus chip is the same chip that the Amiga 3000 uses.

The MEG-A-RAM board cost about $250 then you need a Super Agnus
chip ( about $120 ). I now have a 1 MB Agnus left over.

4389.6 | My little A500 wants it, too!
| MANSW1::SCHMIDT | | Mon Jan 14 1991 09:48 | 12 |
| Steve,
Would you think such a configuration should work in an A500, too? I have
set mine into a COMPTEC case (together with drives, add-on memory and
power supply) with lots of space to spare. So the board would fit.
re .4
If an A500 doesn't work with a 2 MB Agnus and your 1 MB Agnus is still
available, would you sell it?

re .6
Yes, I think the 2 MEG chip would work in a A500. The question
is space. If you already have a new case for the 500 this shouldn't
be a problem.
As for the 1 MB AGNUS, I have one person make an offer but it
may fall through. Send me mail and you can be the next in line.
1 MB AGNUS $60 + shipping

4389.8 | Error when trying to copy file | CGOWGS::MCARA | John McAra | Mon Jan 14 1991 18:51 | 13 |
| There seems to be a problem on the TAPE::USER2: disk. I am trying to copy
the TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]2-MEG-FOR-A2000.PS file and I am getting the following
error message:
%COPY-E-READERR, error reading TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]2-MEG-FOR-A2000.PS;1
-RMS-F-RER, file read error
-SYSTEM-F-FORCEDERROR, forced error flagged in last sector read
%COPY-W-NOTCMPLT, TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]2-MEG-FOR-A2000.PS;1 not completely copied
If there is a good copy of this file available somewhere, I would appreciate
if it could be copied to TAPE again.

4389.11 | It's back | KALI::PLOUFF | Ahhh... cider! | Tue Jan 15 1991 18:04 | 14 |
| I re-uploaded an archived version of the Megachip 2000 ad as
TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]2-MEG-FOR-A2000.ZOO
It's an archive mostly to save space. A chat with Grapevine Group
reveals that they have these boards in stock at $339 and will rebate
$45 in return for a 1 meg Agnus. They also sell through dealers with
no Agnus rebate.
The ad says "Amiga 500 version available soon."
Is the same or different than the board discussed in .0?

4389.12 | I bought one! | RIPPLE::LUKE_TE | | Wed May 22 1991 18:35 | 24 |
| I just bought a MegaChip 2000 and am extremely pleased with it. I was
a little concerned that there might be a "gotcha" going from an old Rev
4.3 motherboard with only 512K of chip to the full 2 megs of chip, but
I had absolutely no problems getting it to work. Two observations,
however are in order:
1. I have an old CMI 14Mhz accelerator board. The two can't be used
together, then their boards overlap at the same height. Any extender
available for the 68000 socket to raise it up about 1/4"? The CMI in
my benchmarks only adds about 25% performance boost, so it was no big
loss, but sometimes that 25% is all the difference.
2. I had thought that like the 1M Chip upgrade that simply decreases
my fast ram by 512K and increases my Chip ram by 512K that my 3MB
system would be 2 MB Chip and 1MB fast. But to my pleasant surprise,
the Megachip 2000 adds 1MB of total ram to my system. I know have 2MB
chip ram and 2MB fast ram. If I would have know that up front, it
would have made the decision between just a 1MB Fatter Agnus and the
MegaChip 2000 a lot easier. (It took me months to decide to spend the
extra money and get 2MB Chip)
2 megabytes of chip ram is heaven in a multitasking graphics
environment (with MIDI)

How about using a socket as an extender? That should give you just
about the right height difference and it's eminently cheap.

4389.14 | lotsa bucks | FRSOLD::ZIMMERMANN | | Sun May 26 1991 19:38 | 12 |
| Just have the German Amiga-Magazine in front of me looking at an
ad of PULSAR for the so called "RetroChip 2000" which is a board
for the 2MB-Agnus and 1 MB Memory (8*511000). It is not clear if
the Agnus is included; they want DM 649,- (that's ~ $380)
I think it's a bit overpriced isn't it? Are we talking about the
same hardware. The Amiga-Magazine reported some problems with
older B2000 motherboard-revisions. I think i wait 6 month to check
if there is a price decrease; DM 450,- including the Agnus will
be a fair price.

About $380 without the 2MB Agnus sounds about right. This board is
not new and I don't expect the price to go down.

4389.16 | send me DM 10,- and i tell you how to make money | FRSOLD::ZIMMERMANN | | Tue May 28 1991 05:37 | 11 |
| OOUUps,
so i have to wait for the 1990 tax refund or the 1991 "christmas-money"
:-(
What about the installation of this board? As far as i know, it sits
on the motherboard over the old (512k-Agnus). Do i have to cut
circuits in the same way like for the 1MB-Agnus installation?
(mean doing the upgrade in the following order:512k-1MB-2MB)
Or can i "jump over" the 1MB?

| From the pictures, it seems you remove the "old" Agnus and plug this
board in the empty socket, after you attach a small wire to a location
on the motherboard. The small wire has a clip on it's end for that
purpose.

4389.19 | I went from 512K to 2MB | RIPPLE::LUKE_TE | | Tue May 28 1991 15:18 | 18 |
| re. 16, 17
I just installed one going from 512K to 2MB in one step (see .12) on a
rev 4.3 motherboard and have experienced no problems. I paid $340 here
in the US and would have gotten $45 back if I had a 1M Agnus. That
price included the 2MB Agnus chip. I was told to keep my 512K Agnus,
that they were considering trading those in in the near future, but I'm
not holding my breath.
The board fits into the Agnus slot, you then change some jumpers and on
older boards (like mine) there was a trace that needed to be cut with
an exacto knife (no big deal). Then there is a wire coming from the
board with this clip on the end that clips onto a pin on the Gary chip.
Now I can multitask almost anything!

than the previous version ..it now fits the A500....
Price is approx 198 But I just might be able to get a discount if
several people are interested...
There is an artical in Amiga Format page 12 , Dec issue , this
information was completely wrong...There is going to be a half page Ad

I have nothing to do with the company...
