4382.0. "ARC and ZOO crash" by UTROP1::LAUREY (Jean Laurey @UTO) Fri Dec 28 1990 09:10

I have managed to KERMIT a text file over from VAX to my M500, unpacked
it with ARC23, everything went OK.

When I do the same with a program file (Fred Fish disk 315 for
example), it works with KERMIT (takes forever), when I then try to use
ZOO it crashes, including my A500.

    Similar results with ARC.

Both programs say something about checksums. I did SET TERMINAL
    /EIGHTBIT

    Anyone any ideas?

M500 should read A500 in previous note, sorry.

My guess is that you have to convert the file before loading
it via kermit. Some file have stream line feed and others
don't. There is a program somewhere on the net called CVTARC.
    It runs under VMS.

Also about the "slowliness", use 1024 packet size.
Kermit help would tell you how to do it.

Or even better, get VLT/zmodem. It doesn't care about
stream line feed and it defaults to 1K packet. Real fast...

I am sure someone else may be able to help you more.

    Vince.
4382.3Change to VLT/ZmodemBEBBI::STEIGERThu Jan 03 1991 07:527
Had the same problems too. After changing all components I figured it
was Kermit on noisy lines doing some strange recovery thereby missing
out some records. Changed to VLT/Zmodem. No more problems and transfers
    a lot faster.
    Hope this helps

Actually it wasn't some strange recovery of Kermits but a case of
misinterpretting the contents of the file by Kermit (it doesn't understand
StreamLF files).

Kermit does understand StreamLF files, but that is not it's default
file type. It likes Fixed and Variable length files.

You need to do a SET FILE TYPE BLOCK before StreamLF file transfers
    to change the file type.
