4379.0. "Information wanted on these Peripherals. Thanx." by SHARE::DOYLE () Thu Dec 27 1990 10:38

I'm looking for information on the following items.... Because of thier
relatively low cost.

------------- Video ---------------------------

Amigen Genlock -------------------- Mimetics
MiniGen --------------------------- Progressive
IMG Scan (500/2000) --------------- SunRize
LIVE:Amiga 500 -------------------- A Squared

On these items I'm interested in finding out if they work well with the
available rendering packages as well as compatibility with present game
software. What do they average in Mhz.

------------ Accelerators ---------------------

Midget Racer 68020 Accelerator ---- CSA (old version, not MEGA)
Processor Accel-500 (PA500) ------- C.M.I.
Huricane 500 ---------------------- Imtronic

By the way, there is a new accelerator out called the "Digifex Accelerator"
Does anyone have any info on this?

Buy the way, all this is for an A500, with a GVP Series II card.

						Thanks;
							Ed

I have the Midget Racer (68020/68882RC25) in my A500 with the Supra
500XP. The 68020 runs at 7.14Mhz(standard 68000 clock rate) the FPU
can run up to 33Mhz. I have not had any problem with it except for
certain copy protected, non-DOS games. As mentioned before elsewhere,
I am unable to enable extended addressing on my Agnus with the Midget
*and* Supra expansion memory installed. I primarily use the Racer for
the FPU; rendering in Silver or Imagine. I have had NO compatibility
problems with PD or commercial programs with the exception of MED213.
The 68000 is unused with the Midget nor does it have provision for
    32-bit memory.

The Midget has NO provisions for 32-bit memory so "normal" program
speed-up is about 1.7 times the A2000. When rendering I get about a
    8-10X speedup over a non-accelerated A500. (25Mhz FPU)

If I were to do it now, I would get an accelerator that has the option
of 32-bit memory either as static ram-load KS into it-or dram, and
allows you to switch between your 68000/680x0 like the Mega-Midget
racer. I am probably going to buy a BARE Mega-Midget Racer

Genlocks: The AMIGEN is OK for home use, but barely. Spend a few
dollars more and get the PRO-GEN, in tests it has performed quite well,
Progressive also sells a mini-gen (I have no idea as to it's
performance) but it has a major shortcoming in that there is no RGB
pass-trough. If you have lots of ca$h, get the super-gen, or a toaster
or ....wait some more untill something better comes along.

    Jean,
Could you explain what RGB pass-through does, please.

    Thanks,
    Barry.

I am currently looking to get an inexpensive way to record Amiga video
to a VCR. I want to balance the inexpensive part with a good quality
    composite signal and RGB pass-thru.

My research has led me to the VIP made by DigiFex. They are currently
selling for $109 direct. It is an external device without any power
supply. It provides both composite video and Y/C (i.e. SuperVHS).
The VIP has been available for about 3 months now.

Does anyone have any comments about this device or another alternative?

BTW: RGB pass-thru means that you can use your normal Amiga
monitor concurrently with the device. Some gen-locks and
video encoders inhibit normal RGB output when in operation.
