4378.0. "Lucasfilms'LOOM game" by WJG::GUINEAU () Thu Dec 27 1990 09:53

Santa left the game LOOM by Lucasfilm for me...

Has anyone played this? The graphics are not bad - looks a bit like an IBM EGA
port. Animation is real good and player movement is nice (just point the
mouse and click. The player then walks there for you!) Has decent music and
even comes with a cassette tape of the story so you don't have to read!

Comes on 3 floppies - NOT copy protected! (there is the look up in the book
thing but it's simple and quick) It installs real easily on hard disk.
If you have anything other than a 68000 you will need to disable all
cache/burst stuff via SetCPU. It still hangs very infrequently, so save after
major "finds"!

ok, now for help!

I seem to be stuck (my favorite way to play adventures) getting past
the "water spout". I got everything I could find before leaving the
island.

"There must be SOME way to untwist the waterspout"

Did you get your coupon for the CD that is available. My dealer has
them on the shelf. It is a cd of the soundtrack for 5.00 handling
    charge.

No, maybe after I send in my registration card.

HINT: Think of reversing the DRAFTS, you might get strange effects.

yes, it works good!

I ended up calling the hint hotline (a 900 number at 0.75 a minute) and
got that clue. Once you know that technique, the rest of the game is easier.

I finished the game late last night after only 2 more calls to the hotline!

I must say that I VERY much enjoyed this game. The designers philosophy of
not gettting you killed every other step makes it a real pleasure to play.

The animated scenes were great! I'm tempted to play in "expert" mode since
they claim to give you a special animation at the end in this mode...

I figure I could load the start of the game I just won (since I know all the
drafts) and win it easily :-)

If all Lucasfilm games are like this one, I highly recommend them! Not being
a game player (AT ALL!) I was captured by this one and played it till I
won (12 hours?)...

It's been awhile since I played Loom and I don't remember this particular
event, but in Loom, you get buy almost everything by playing the right tune on
your magical stick (er, spin the right weave?). Anyway, as you approach an
obstical, you will usually hear a weave played which is the one to repeat.

I played through in expert mode, with the aid of a Korg musical instrument
tuner I could properly jot down the notes (the drafts are different when you
start a new game). I thought the "extra scene" wasn't really worth the
trouble.

It's been a while, but as I recall, you get to see (fairly graphically) the
demise of one of the baddies. "If you play with fire, you might get burnt".

As Ian said in .2, you have a draft for twisting. To UNtwist something, play
the draft backwards.

I've looked at everything; tried everything and searched everywhere!
I keep trying to figure out something that I might have missed!
Do I just have to keep practicing the "DRAFTS" that I already know
to gain a level or do you usually have to find a specific object?
(I get to the waterspout and it keeps telling me that the draft
necessary to stop the thing is too high for me)

re: Note 4378.8 by Mike

Hmmm, have you searched the water spout for a draft?

When you were on land, did you explore all the tents, try dying some fabric
(ugh, green!) and such? You pick up notes here and there, but generally the
game is designed so you can't go where you can't go, if you get my drift. The
fact that you're at the spout should mean that the means to get past it are
close at hand. Are you able to return to the dock?

I'll try to take a look and see what notes I might have at home...

Good Luck,

Jim
4378.10Thanks alot Jim!NEST::CURRYWed May 01 1991 19:389
Yes,Jim,I am able to go back to the dock and I also have done the
other things that you mentioned. The draft that the waterspout gives
me has a note in it that I can't reach yet. I'm able to play the
notes C,D,and E but the draft that the waterspout gives me is an
    F. I try to play an F and it tells me that I need more experience.
Thanks in advance for any help! This is a great
game and I can't wait to continue on in it!

Mike, here's some spoiler info from my son to help you past the
    waterspout:

    1. Spin the straw into gold.
    2. Dye all the undyed cloth and undye all the dyed cloth.
    3. Open the clamshell.
    4. Knock over the flask (this will be important later).

    Good luck
    Rich (and son Casey)
