I've been looking for something to enable me to upgrade from my poor old A500. It's so old that it's still using Agnus with the good figure. I can't conceive of someone actually wanting to buy it. It still runs well and has its Minimegs memory and Escort hard drive controller. It is just depressing to hear of all these newfangled 68030's and such and 1 meg of chip memory and not be able to participate. Does anyone ever want one of these? If I'm able to sell it, I can justify buying at least a 2000. Should I take it through the FAT Agnus upgrade and get me a Bodega Bay (which is not shipping until February, BTW) and be satisfied? Pardon the rambling. Just had to get it off my chest. Tony

>It's so old ...etc. Don't forget that it is still a generation or two ahead of The Apple II, C64, c128, IBM PC (say XT or equiv.) etc., etc. all of which (I think) have versions sold new today. An upgrade to a current A500 means adding a new 1.3 rom and a Fat agnus, not major surgery by any means. A straight "vintage 500" sells for about $350-400. >I can't conceive of someone actually wanting to buy it. I can. Give it to me. I'll make a quick $400 or more. ;-) Better yet give it to a school. Many have _really_ old apple IIs and haven't got a clue as to how nice a "poor old" dinosaur A500 is. BTW I too wish for 68030's, flicker fixers, A3000s etc. To cheer myself up I just show my brother, who has a MAC II at work and a MAC SE at home, a demo like Subway or DOC and remind him that my 500 can be bought at a mall for $500 (without monitor, of course, just the way they sell MAC IIs. ;-)). Thanks for cheering me up. My approach will be to do the ROM and Agnus upgrade, then add the Bodega Bay. One day A500's will also have the flicker fixed! ,,, |o o| { v } --WOW!
4369.3 | Just something to consider... | TENAYA::MWM | Tue Dec 18 1990 19:26 | 9
2.0 has arrived - it's out for 3000s. CBM once announced that they were going to announce 2.0 for the A500. If you don't have a pressing need for the upgrade, it might be more cost effective to wait until the 2.0 for the 500 announcement is made. If CBM pulls a fast one and announce NO for 2.0 on the 500 (and pisses off a majority of their developers!), you'll feel bad about having waited, though. <mike
4369.4 | There's ICD and MicroWay... | ARRODS::GOLDSTEIN | Steve G DTN: 847-5415 | Tue Dec 18 1990 20:24 | 21 |
But Wait...There is a Flicker Fixer for the Amiga 500 First there's the new ICD board that fits in the left hand corner.. It was demoed at both the Commordore and Computer Shopper Show's here in England... and Second you could use the DEB2000 board...and Microway flickerFixer.. The DEB board goes under the Denise and has a small ribbon cable to another board that the flickerFixer fits into... Don't forget the cost of a MultiSync Monitor... The ICD is approx 300 or less The MicroWay is more expensive DEB2000 approx 70 and flickerFixer approx 375... Steve G |
