4348.0. "Help with 8MB external RAM" by UFHIS::JMASLEN (The wheels fallen off your day yet?!) Tue Dec 11 1990 10:46

Question time for a novice AMIGA 500 user!
I have a 500,501 expansion, and an unpopulated (0K)590 Hard Disk.I
will be doing video animation work with this thing.

The question is: is there an external, autoconfiguring 8MB RAM
for the 500? Something with a 'passthru' busconnector so I can fit this
between the 590 and the 500 on the left hand side.

I have seen memory upgrades for INSIDE the 500 but have only read
problems when it came to animation like Deluxe Paint III.

Also any prices/dealers/brands experiences etc would make me a
happy user........many thanx and a Merry Christmas folks

PS: I will be putting in a 1MB Fatter Agnus chip shortly as well....any
thing to watch for RAMwise - internally or externally

Well, there's the SupraRAM 500RX which seems to fit your needs. It's a
small ~1" wide strip that matches the 500 contours, has space for 0.5, 1,
2, 4 or 8MB of fast RAM and provides bus pass-thru. Take a look in recent
AmigaWorlds at Supra ads. Have no idea what prices on this unit are.

What version of the Motherboard do you have? If you are going to
install the 1MB Fatter Agnus (via the cut trace method) then you
will invalidate the warranty! Also check to see if you have the
ever present warranty validation sticker across the case halves.
Breaking that will certainly invalidate your warranty. I have not
seen a 1MB motherboard yet, just wondering if you happened to get
one.

4348.4No trace cuttingDECWET::DAVISnice computers don't go downTue Dec 11 1990 16:006
I replaced the Agnus in my rev 5 motherboard. There is a method where
you do not have to cut the trace, just bend a pin out of the soceket
on Gary and move the address jumper. This method works great on a
stock A500.

4348.5Spot the rev. level!UFHIS::JMASLENThe wheels fallen off your day yet?!Wed Dec 12 1990 06:4010
Thanks for the Supra 500X idea.........regarding re:3 & 4........how
do I determine my 500's rev. level (it is new as of a week ago here in
Germany) and if there is already a Fatter Agnus 1MB in it or not
without breaking the warranty stickers.

Also, what is your alternative rev 5 method with bending pins etc
on the Gary chip please?

Thanx fjeff......who doesn't wish to kill a new <working>
machine!!
4348.6Bend Gary save an etchDECWET::DAVISnice computers don't go downWed Dec 12 1990 12:1211
Instead of cutting the etch that goes to pin41(I think) on the
expansion memory connector(header). Remove GARY, slightly bend out
pin 32 (-EXRAM), then replace GARY.

The motherboard has its revision level etched or silk-screened onto it
along with the chip "names" and a lot of other stuff. The only way to
do the modification is to open the A500's case. Commodore gets highly
agitated when you mention upgrading the A500 to 1MB chip ram. :^) There
is a PD utility that is supposed to tell you if you have the 8372A or not.

4348.7OPEN A CASE -- LOOSE A WARRANTYSDOGUS::WILLIAMSTOPGUNWed Dec 12 1990 18:1116
Check to see if you have a warranty sticker on your machine. If
you do then you won't be able to open the machine without destroying
that sticker. If you don't have a sticker then you can probably
get away with opening the case and checking to see if you have a
REV 6 motherboard or not. Look for the Agnus number while you are
at it. I think all machines are shipping with the 1MB Agnus, it
is just that Commodore has found some problems running with the
1MB Agnus in A500s. They seem to be timing problems, and CBM just
doesn't want to have to deal with them. The CBM line (according
to my dealer) is that altering the machine in any way that requires
opening the case invalidates the warranty. Get to know your dealer
really well! The dealer does have stickers that can replace the
factory sticker.

4348.8Expansion device problemsDECWET::DAVISYou always get what you deserve!Wed Dec 12 1990 19:386
I encountered the timing problem with my A500+Midget Racer+Supra500XP.
When the 1MB chip ram is enabled with the above hardware the video
wouldn't sync. If I removed either the 500XP or Midget everything
functioned fine. The 8372A works fine on my unexpanded A500.

4348.9AVAIL ~= case-cracking?CRISTA::CAPRICCIOBlind as a cave shrimpWed Dec 12 1990 21:386
Am I missing something here? Wouldn't the AVAIL command tell you if
you've got 1Mb chip RAM? Can you have the muther FANG installed but
only enabled for 512K?

4348.10BOMBE::MOOREAmiga: Real computing on a PC budgetWed Dec 12 1990 22:335
Nope. At some point Commodore began building all new Amigas with the
fatter Agnus chip installed, but they kept the jumpers configured for
512K chip and 512K (half)fast RAM. So, some machines are *capable* of
having 1 meg of chip RAM even though only 512K shows up until internal
changes are made.

Kramden Utilities SI will do it....

Somewhere on WJG:: or Tape:: you can find the Kramden Utils
the SI programm ( similiar to Norton... in PC Universe..)
will tell you all significant Infos on your System without
Warranty Problems.
