4339.0. "Need help with 1.3 MSH (MessyDos)" by AISG::LANDINGHAM (Guy M., DLB5-3/E5, 291-9268) Sat Dec 08 1990 20:02

Can some kind soul out there who is using MSH please help me?

I acquired MSH v1.3 from fish disk 382. I cannot seem to get it to work. I
copied MessyFileSystem to L: and messydisk.device to DEVS:. I'm trying to read
720K-formatted MS-DOS disks in drive 1. Here is my Mountlist entry for that
drive:

/* Messy file system on messy blocks: */
MSH:	FileSystem = L:MessyFileSystem
	Device = messydisk.device
	Unit = 1
	Flags = 0
	LowCyl = 0 ; HighCyl = 79
	Surfaces = 2
	BlocksPerTrack = 9
	Buffers = 5
	DosType = 1
	BufMemType = 1	/* messydisk needs no chip mem */
	BootPri = 0
	Stacksize = 4096
	Priority = 5
	GlobVec  = -1
	Mount = 1
#

I copied this (I hope verbatim) from msh.man. What happens is that I inserted
an MS-DOS disk in drive 1. The drive clicks a few times (AmigaDOS trying to
read?) and then stops. I then enter:
	1> mount msh:
which returns without error. Then I enter:
	1> cd msh:
but all that happens is that a Retry/Cancel requester appears that says "Not a
DOS disk in Unit 1", which looks (to me) like AmigaDOS is still trying to read
the disk.

I hope someone can help me!

Thanks.

    Are you using AmigaDOS MOUNT or ARP MOUNT? There is suposedly some
    strange bug in ARP MOUNT.

I am using Arp Mount, because I thought I read somewhere that that's what was
needed. I went "back" to msh 1.5 and it sort of worked. That is, I was able to
format a 720K MSDOS disk, CD to it, and copy files back and forth between
AmigaDOS disks. However, when I tried to read the disk via Transformer, MSDOS
reported data errors on the disk.

I'll re-install the 1.3 version of MSH and try the AmigaDOS Mount command.

Thanks for the help.

You might want to mount msh: before you put the disk in. I'm not
sure if it makes any difference, but some magic does seem to happen
during disk validation...
4339.5Version 1.5 worksFRSOLD::ZIMMERMANNSat Jan 19 1991 13:4224
    moin, moin,

    during this afternoon i found the time to look 'against' my MSH V.130
    problems. When version 1.5 comes out i had no problem getting it to
    work on all my internal and external drives (df0,df1,df2,df3; df2 is
    5,25"). My problems started when i updgrated to version 1.30.

    It was crazy, BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Now i tried it again. But NO CHANCE. My mood becomes bad, more bad,
    bader ......GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    So i installed version 1.5 (THE OLDEST) again. AND IT WORKS !!!

    I have no idea why this is so, and there are no informations what
    has exactly changed, but only the first MSH-version works for me.

    I anybody out there who made the same experiences ??

I had a lot of trouble getting version 1.30 working as well. Eventually I
tracked down my problem to the fact that the mountlist had to have the line
"RESERVED = 0 " in it. Once I put that in it all worked OK.

Hope this helps.

    Any A3000, OS 2.0 users able to make MSH1.3 properly?

    I've managed to create a condition where I can do directories and read
    files from the PC-DOS disk, but I'm unable to write to any of several
    DOS formatted disks. (DOS's 3.3 and 5.0 both)

    Anyone else seen this?
