4336.0. "playing with Elvira" by SALEM::LEIMBERGER () Fri Dec 07 1990 06:56

I spent the better part of last evening playing with Elvira.
Well actually I was playing with the game Elvira. The game has been
very good so far, but I never played DM so I cannot compare them.
Elvira is a Fantasy role playing adventure. The scope of the area to
be covered consists of an 800 room castle, and the lands around it.
I left the castle in search of herbs needed to cast spells, and the
path led me to a hedgerow. I did not enter the hedgrow so I can't say
what is (if anything) beyound the maze.
The interface is icon, mouse driven, and the game can be run from your
hard Disk.(5 floppies) I like the way that the direction arrows are
implemented along with a set of up,or down arrows for handling stairs.
It appears that these are context sensitive. If you approach a decending
staircase then the down arrow is highlighted. The same goes for potions,
weapons etc. For example if you click on a potion in inventory, over in the
action window the options USE,and CONSUME are activated for your chioce.
There is a status bar that updates you on skill, strength, resilience,
dexterity, life, and experiance. Of course skill will change with each
    weapon you select etc.
In order to make spells you must find the objects needed, and then
take them to the kitchen where Elvira mixs them up to produce a potion.
This is where the copy protection comes in. The spell book is printed
in light blue with dark red letters covering the text. You must use
a red filter to read the spells. Of course I never saw my filter( most
likely dropped it) but not to worry. A trip to the local office
supplies store for a red folder cover(.38) and I was all set. Turns out
that not only can I red more(whole page) with it but it actually reads
better than the enclosed filter. The graphics are very good, and sound
consists of digitized speech, and sounds. The music is haunting an I
found myself not trying to kill it for once in my life(don't know if
you can). The graphics are very gory, and you may want to play the game
before you buy it for the children.
    	From the package
Over 100 hours of frightening gameplay
An enormous 800 room castle to explore
    		Digitized voices,and a haunting soundtrack
Over 300 ominous objects at your disposal
Real-time hand to hand combat with more than 100 characters
Comes with spellbook to mix potions ward off evil spirits
Totally icon driven. easy to play.
I like the game, and look forward to exploring the castle. I am not sure
how much depth is has yet,but it holds promise at this time. It should
be noted that this game is not the same one that Horror soft released
before. They have completly redid the game. Remember that you may want
to check it out before you give it to your children.(I am not one to
think along these lines on a day to day basis so....)

4336.1Sounds Good, but...... COMICS::HOGGANNo, I am not kidding !!!Thu Dec 13 1990 07:0110
Hi,

This Elvira sounds fairly good, but how can I tell if I am ordering the old or new
version? I saw a screen shot from the old version and it looked pretty good; if
the new version is better, then it's a must!

Does anyone know about Damocles or Immortal? Both sound ok, but without seeing a
review or screenshots, I'm reluctant to spend hard cash on them...

4336.2new game called "Elvira"CRISTA::LEIMBERGERI have my marbles now I want yoursMon Dec 17 1990 07:316
The new version is distributed by Accolade. I am not sure how you
would sort it out by mail order. In the shops it's easy because the new
game(really not a version) is packaged distincly. I think the old game
was not actually called "Elvira" . I own Immortal, and while it is very good it
is not near as rich as Elvira . spend the extra mony for Elvira.

4336.3Stuck on ElviraBRISCO::SYSTEMVery pooer. Very pooer indeed.Fri Jan 18 1991 05:1216
Anyone got anywhere with this one? I've got a distinct problem...

I've found all of the weapons on the ground floor. I've also thoroughly
explored the grounds, been to the centre of the maze, and so I have lots
of useful herbs to mix. BUT...

When I get back to the kitchen, it's occupied by the 'Tub of Lard', as
Elvira calls her. She seems unstoppable! I've tried the firedagger spells
and the lightning spell, I've tried all of my weapons, including the crossbow -
nothing seems to stop her! In addition, if I leave the kitchen and return, my
screen blacks out, which looks like some kind of bug to me.

Has anyone disposed of her yet? I'm getting well bored of seeing my head in the
soup cauldron...!

My son bought Elvira a while ago. Occasionally he is grossed out by
the graphic violence, but he still enjoys playing it. I asked him
about the problem in 4336.3. He had some trouble with it, but found
    the answer. Spoiler follows.

Somewhere below the ground floor you can find some salt. Use this
    against Tubbie.

This is hearsay, since I haven't yet played the game myself, and I
    may have misremembered.

That's great - I was getting ready to give up on account of this one!
I'll let you know how I get on

PS - Salt vs lard? This is logic? I'll comment when I've tried it...

I found some crude maps for the game "Elvira". I'm not sure if these
will be of any help, but here they are:

If you visit Elvira in her room after she confronts you at the door, she
mentions that the cook never uses the particular commodity in her food.
(Although I still haven't been able to find it, any pointers?)

Cheers,

Jim

p.s. her room is on the second floor of the castle, the door that is
*usually* locked.

The salt is in the torture chamber . this is down where all the
rooms with cots are. You will need the prongs also but cannot take
them until you put the poor soul's soul to rest.
