I've looked through all the apparently relevant notes and haven't found an answer to my particular difficulty. I'm new to this conference, and also to VMS<->AmigaDOS transfers in general. I'm running a rather venerable rev of OnLine!, and usually use XMODEM protocol for transfers. It seemed like a logical thing to try using the executable XMODEM.EXE with the command XMODEM <filename>, after defining the EXE as a foreign command, of course; however, OnLine! hung waiting for the file to start coming down the chute. I'm not intimate with XMODEM protocol, but I sort of presumed that the NAK character referred to as starting the transfer is the one "normally" sent to initiate XMODEM transfers. Is it maybe not so? I didn't set any specific terminal characteristics after dialing in- I did take a look at what they defaulted to, and I thought I did have the PASTHRU characteristic. Is there any note or text file describing the correct procedures for dialing in and initiating file transfers?

Sounds like you've taken the correct steps. Check with your system manager to see what kind of modem is attached to the VAX. If it has one of the new Telcor 9600 baud modems with ECC and real-time data compression, Xmodem will not work with a standard Hayes modem on your Amiga. You'll have to switch to Zmodem, or convince your manager that you need a 9600 baud Telcor at home. Our system manager(s), due to popular demand, reinstated a few vanilla Hayes lines. Ed. | |||||

Err, how about $XMODEM S filename ^^^ All the versions of VMS XMODEM I've seen require that you give a send or receive command. Then usually there will be a little blurb saying to start XMODEM on your local machine or saying how to abort the transfer. You might also check that both the server line and VMS terminal characteristics are set to 8-bit characters.Otherwise looks like you're doing the right things. Wes |
