4306.0. "PP&S FrameGrabber questions" by BAGELS::BRANNON (Dave Brannon) Sat Nov 24 1990 16:25

I just bought a PP&S FrameGrabber from the consignment shelf at the
Memory Location and am trying to figure out if it is defective or
is supposed to work this way.

The problem: black bands scroll slowly up the screen that gradually get
smaller as the unit warms up. Eventually you get to just
a small grey band, it never goes away.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
     Dave

What version of software do you have, and what are the conditons of
    image capture? (freeze frame...???)

version 1.03 and using the 1084 monitor hookup to see the video signal
(tab or space bar to toggle between video and the framegrabber
    software)

The bars are visible in the image capture as a couple bands of slightly
different color if I use low color intensity.

Is it normal to see some sort of scan bars on the video signal from a
framegrabber, or should I expect to see a solid picture like from a
    genlock?

The picture should be rock solid. I was asking about software rev
because V2.0 is more sensitive to sync from the video source. On the
other hand V1.xx does NOT work when my supergen is connected, if you
have a genlock, take it off and try the box again.

    Jean,

Thanks for info, I took it back after trying it a second time and
having to wait over 30 minutes for the display to get solid enough
to digitize. Seems to have a problem that goes away after it warms
up enough. I don't have a genlock. And I tried it with two VCRs,
    same problem.

Glad to see that it is just a problem with that unit and not a
    "feature" of the framegrabber.

The price was right, $400, a lot better than the price of $625 for
a new one. And it was fun to play with after it warmed up, convinced
me that I "need" something that grabs frames that fast.

Now to wait for the next one to show up, as all the video folks
rush out to buy the Video Toasters :-)

How do like 2.0 software? Does it offer more dithering? I tried
grabbing some 4 color pics to use as a simgen backdrop, the 1.03
stuff wasn't too impressive. I ended up using only the b/w and
    4096 color modes.

    Thanks,
     Dave

V 2.0 of the software has all kinds of nice bells and whistles, like
date stamp, multi windows (4 or 16 in one frame), you can expand part
of the image or shrink it down, and more stuff than I can remember.
All the software was written by the same guy who wrote PIXmate, so
image processing isn't news to him. About the only thing that would
leave me wanting for a toaster would be the special effects and the
real time image grabbing like LIVE is doing (except LIVE has bad color
    control).

PS PP & S (Progressive...) makes good stuff, but customer satisfaction
does not seem to be a high priority item with them and I wonder why I
even bother to fill out the warranty cards. When I bought my
framegrabber, it came with V 1.0 of the software and I only found out
    that V 1.03 came out when a co-worker bought his. V 2.0 I saw in a
store (it's an extra cost upgrade), did I get a mailing? noooo!
