4267.0. "<ESCAPE> Key Blues" by SMAC10::DOLAN () Tue Nov 13 1990 08:49
Another cry for help from a new Amiga user.
I've just bought an A500, and while hacking my way around the workbench, I
discovered that my <ESACAPE> key does not appear to work. This made life
difficult, at first, until I discovered that <ctrl>[ produced the desired
result, at least in the ED editor. I've since converted to using MEMACS from
the EXTRAS disk, which hides the problem competely, as I can do everything
from menus.
A new problem has now arisen, though, as I've got a flight simulator game (I
don't have it handy and can't remember the title - it may be the F16) which
requires <ESCAPE> for some of its set up functions.
What is really curious is that a close friend of mine bought a machine at the
same time as me, and his is the same.
The question is, are these set-up problems, or are there really faults on BOTH
of these boxes. They're both less than 1 week old, so I guess there should be
no problem getting the dealer to look at them, but I want to make sure that
there is something wrong before starting to complain.
If they are set-up problems, does anyone know how to cure them?
The systems were both the new "Screen Gems" packs, bought in the UK. They have
small UK stickers on the keyboard. They have Kickstart 1.3, and the Workbench
software reports to be 1.3 also.
By the way "Startup-Sequence" sets the keyboard to be the UK type.
Hoping someone can help

| You might try (as a test) to set the keyboard to usa1 to see if that
fixes the problem with the escape key. If it does then the UK keymap
needs to be updated to include it.

| Thanks for the swift reply. I tried that last night, but it made no difference.
I also got the chance to try my workbench disk in an older Amiga, and it works
perfectly - so its not a software problem.
So, I'm off to my dealer, because it looks like a hardware problem, unless its
something weird to do with chip revision levels. The only thing that worries
me is why we should have two systems with identical faults.
Thanks for the help anyway.
