4248.0. "MINIX <> Amiga 1000?" by ASDS::WARD (Weed my tulips - (Bo) No (Knew) New Taxes) Wed Nov 07 1990 20:08

    I could cry...

The note 4132 for Amiga MINIX states support for 500 and 2000.
Has anyone seen anything on the 1000?

I believe someone in the comp.os.minix news group has gotten it running
on an Amiga 1000.

I have Minix and have had some problems (known and are now fixed. We (me and
a few others) have been "beta" testing a fixed version.

Once I get some more time and have used it more, I'll post a mini-review
of Amiga Minix...

Re: .0

I find it very hard to believe that something that claims to run on the
500 or 2000 can't run on the 1000.

About the only thing that separates the 1000 from a 500 or 2000 is
how much memory they have, and that some 1000s lack extra-halfbrite
mode.

Newer 500s and 2000s have the new Agnus that supports one meg of chip ram
and big blits. However, it does not sounds like they are claiming to need
a one meg Agnus but just a 500 or 2000.

I suspect that they just haven't tested with a 1000, and are afraid to
claim to run on that machine.

I believe Randy is pretty much right. I'm pretty sure
Minix has been run on a 1000 but it requires at least 1meg ram.

The 1meg chip ram (new agnus) is the source of a nasty bug with the shipped
version of Amiga Minix. As I said in the other minix note (:-) ), this
has been fixed.

For the curious, the 1 meg chip bug was this: The 512K of chip memory above the
first 512k was being allocated for disk and screen buffers added to the free
list! So when you ran programs that needed extra memory, they would trash
disk buffers or do wierd things to the screen.

I have 3 corrupted (critical) floppies as a result. I've since just recently
gotten replacements (they were originals since you need to boot from them to
get to the diskcopy program!).

    John,

does the version of Minix you have support a hard-disk, or is it
    currently floppy bound?

    regards,

Forgive my ignorance, but is MINIX in the PD/freeware/shareware
catagory or do I have to make a commercial purchase? Is it
    on the Enet?

It commercial software. It costs $169.00 from Prentice hall. Do a
