4242.0. "Rev. 4.3 Mother Boards" by HKFINN::MACDONALD (VAXELN - Realtime Software Pubs) Mon Nov 05 1990 08:48

    My mother board is Rev. 4.3. Is it possible that there were hardware
    changes after V4.3 that might have an impact on software. In other
    words, is the Rev 4.3 board deficient in some regard, especially with
    graphics?

    I stripped out all peripherals from my 2000 over the weekend to run
    some tests for Cliff Dugan (Questronix). Using my very bare 2000 and a
    factory V1.3 Workbench disk, we could not get A64 V1.01n to run. Also,
    MuchMore V2.7 displayed a very jittery scroll (unlike V2.5).

    Anyone out there with some thoughts on these problems?

Yes, newer motherboards have the 1meg chip ram Agnus.

    My board has the 1 Mbyte chip ram Agnus too. I am looking for hardware
    changes on the board that might affect software.

4242.4Software has resistor fix!KAOA01::PACEYThu Dec 06 1990 10:104
    We had software problems using Quarterback and a jittery monitor during
    occasions hard to describe. Solved by adding resistor to the bus output
    driver chip, a known Commodore fix. Resistor was 2.2k 1/4 watt. ask
    your dealer to install or verify. It fixes fast IO transfer problems.

    Yes, my 4.3 has been upreved to a 4.5. I believe I used a 2.2 resistor.

4242.6software or hardware?KAOA01::PACEYFri Dec 07 1990 13:3718
    more info on 4242.4 We were using a CBM-2090A and running QuarterBack
    to 3.5" internal diskette for backup. Reported write errors to DFn: and
    aborted job. tests showed there were no actual errors on DFn. Would
    bomb several times /diskette, occasionally might get all way thru. Two
    separate A2000s would do this but one would never complete a diskette
    and had funny noise patterns show on the monitor at times during
    attempts at backup.This CPU was missing the resistor per note 2944.7
    item 5). Worked okay after adding resistor. The other A2000 had
    resistor but still reported DFn write errors once or twice in several
    diskettes. Definetly NOT bad or cheap diskettes. This A2000 finally ran
    Quarterback flawlessly after the Fatter Agness was installed. (never
    did show any noise on monitor) Tried putting a 1K res. on bus transc.
    but the harddrive (Seagate) wouldn't always autoboot on powerup so put
    in a 2.2K for compromise, (did this before Fat Agie installed).
    Quarterback did tell us they were revising the prog as it was too pushy
    for the 2090 and some other hardware, weren't specific. So knowing
    what DEC went thru with the UniBus, why shouldn't CBM have bus speed
    problems that affect software?
