4227.1 | Me thinks U18 | CRISTA::CAPRICCIO | Smilin' Joe Fission | Sat Oct 27 1990 17:34 | 19 |
| Don't take my word for it but I'd say the diag was pointing to U18. It
looks as if it passed the first hunk (2264D0 - 27FFFF) and failed on
the second (280000 -2FFFFF). Then, if the "X" means a failed bit, it's
pointing to bits 0-3 which according to the bit-to-IC map is U18.
Probably the proper thing to do is return it to the dealer, though I
realize that being without your A590 for that long is painfull. I'd
hope that the dealer tested the new memory configuration on one of his
machines (assuming you just brought the A590 to him). If not, you could
crack it open and check for the obvious; orientation and bent pins. If
everything looks okay, you could swap U18 with say U19 and see if the
diagnostic changes the failed bits to 4-7, indicating a bad chip. Of
course, I don't know how supportive your dealer will be if you go
poking around without his consent, but I won't say anything if you
won't...
Hope this helps,
Pete

4227.2 | U18 was the culprit | BELFST::MCCLINTOCK | Peter | Mon Oct 29 1990 06:16 | 4 |
| Yes, One pin was not in place on the U18 chip. Everything is working
fine now.

4227.3 | Doesn't even boot? | MADRE::MWM | | Fri Feb 15 1991 22:09 | 13 |
| My turn -
I just added 2 meg to a working 590. The system won't come up. If I set
the jumper to 0 memory, it boots fine. If I set it to anything beyond
that, it doesn't even get to the dark grey initial load screen.
The chips are labelled AAA1M304P-08. Could someone verify that these
are indeed the 256Kx4 CMOS DRAM my receipt says they are? I'm not sure
I trust the supermarket droids.
Thanx,

That 1M in the part number would make me very suspicious. Otherwise I
can't say.

4227.5 | Store claims they are the correct chip | MADRE::MWM | | Sun Feb 17 1991 16:47 | 8 |
| I called the store back. They claim they are standard 256Kx4 VGA RAM
chips, and those should work just fine. The second claim was that the
256Kx4 chips are the only 20-pin dips I'm liable to run into. They are
a 1Megabit chip, so 1M makes some sense. I'm still worried 'bout it,
though...

4227.6 | How fast? | TLE::TLET8::ASHFORTH | The Lord is my light | Mon Feb 18 1991 10:19 | 6 |
| If the store is not completely Amiga-literate, and if they usually deal with
other (shudder!) PCs, they may not know that the chips need to be at least rated
at 120 (if I remember correctly) nanoseconds. (Doublecheck the manual, it's been
a while since I added memory.) I recall using 80 ns chips.

4227.7 | Some parts may not be compatible | BOMBE::MOORE | Amiga: Real computing on a PC budget | Mon Feb 18 1991 15:38 | 11 |
| The "-08" on the end of the part number would seem to indicate that
his chips are rated at 80ns.
I recently assisted a friend with adding 2mb to his A2091 card (same
basic design as A590). The parts he got from MicroProcessors Unlimited
(in Oklahoma) were made by Hyundai (HY51C4256S-12, I think). These
chips did *NOT* work in the A2091, even though everything seemed to
indicate that they should. They even sent him a second set of parts
(same vendor and number). Out of 32 chips, we couldn't find 16 that
would operate reliably! Finally he requested a third set from a
different vendor (Toshiba), which worked perfectly.

4227.8 | The A590 was busted | MADRE::MWM | | Tue Feb 19 1991 04:20 | 8 |
| My problem is solved. I returned the chips (they were 80 ns), and
dragged the A590 down to my dealer. For an extra $8, they installed
the ram, and informed me that the memory controller PAL was missing.
I'm going to have some words with CATS tomorrow - shipping hardware
with critical components missing!
