4145.0. "C64 Emulator" by DICKNS::MACDONALD (VAXELN - Realtime Software Pubs) Sat Sep 22 1990 22:04

I've uploaded the C64 emulator that people are talking about.

Could you post a brief description? I haven't heard people talking
    about it.

     Is this new or what...
The manual makes this look like an impressive program...
I'll check out how it works
    Tonight....

There is one catch, you need the hardware interface for $25 to utilize
and device storage (from what I gather). It does work though. I typed
in some simple programs. The nice thing is that it is multitasking. You
can run a C64 program, and an Amiga program simultaneously.
4145.4Some pluses+++SHARE::DOYLETue Sep 25 1990 09:0211
The big plus for people I know is that it'll allow them to retrieve
all those print-shop graphics they invested so much time and money in
    and save them as iff's.
Also, if you wanted to use Quantum-link, you can use the emulator
(or does Q-link's disk use a fast format?).
As far as disk storage, it's supposed to let you access df0: and df1:
through the emulator. (although the disk format will still be Amiga
    file system.

4145.5Useful, but ...ULTRA::KINDELBill Kindel @ BXB1Tue Sep 25 1990 10:1218
I picked up a commercial C=64 emulator for $19 through one of the
mail-order outfits. It included a serial/parallel conversion box that
connects the Amiga's parallel (printer) port to your Commodore diskette
    drives and printer.

.4 Also, if you wanted to use Quantum-link, you can use the emulator
.4 (or does Q-link's disk use a fast format?).

This would depend upon the emulator addressing the Amiga's RS232 serial
port as if it were the C=64 serial port AND appropriate setup of the
    Quantum Link modem configuration.

The emulator gives an effective, albeit cumbersome, means of moving
files between the C=64/128 environment and the Amiga environment. It's
less than 100% accurate, so some programs that use every nook and
cranny of the C=64 may fail in the emulator. For my purposes, a C=128
emulation would be a lot more useful (40 & 80 column displays in two
windows? 8^). So would emulation of a C=17xx RAM Expansion Unit.

Quick Warning:

This version of the software will only function on a base 68000 system! I
failed to notice that in the manual, and when I tried it out last night,
it wouldn't run. Not even when I tried to fall back on the 68010.

Apparently there is a 680x0 version in the works. Until then, people
with accelerators will have to wait. I may swap my 68000 back in for the
time being, and see how it runs with only 1 meg.

     RE:-2

This program does allow you to use the amiga drives as storage devices.
However they are still in amigados format, not c-64.
So if you can get a C-64 program onto an amiga-formatted disk, your
all set. (as long as it's not copy protected).
This is how I tested Bluethunder and superkong (both PD versions) last
    night.
The programs ran, but Bluethunder had trouble with sprite detection,
and it's use of the raster interupts, messed up the screen abit
    (flashing).
Super donkey kong had similar problems however the it seemed a bit
more stable and sprite colision worked correctly.
      They both ran terribly slow.....
I'll try messing with some of the screen parameters and see if this
    helps speed it up any.

4145.8C64 ROMsDICKNS::MACDONALDVAXELN - Realtime Software PubsWed Sep 26 1990 17:305
If you have a C64, you can copy the ROM contents to the A64. The
programs that allow this are included in the A64 package. It may make
it *more* compatible. Also, it is possible that some games utilize the
RAM available in the 1541 disk drives. I believe the A64 manual warns
    about that.

Maybe in the future he will make it so instead of needing a 64 drive
because it has ram in it..unlike the amiga drive..he will make it so it
uses amiga RAM for the drive..so it will be more compatible with amig
    drives..

    nybody understand what im saying?

yes, I can see it now... a ram drive emulating an smart c64 drive
talking over a 2400 bps serial link. Just so that the "fast loaders"
    can work. Ick.

Or a ram assisted real amiga disk drive doing the same thing. Double
    ick.

Now if only he was spending his time doing something better, like an
    8bit Atari emulator :-) (I have one of those, don't have a 64)

But at least he proved that you don't have to take over the system and
blow away multitasking to do an emulation on an Amiga.

IVE HEARD ABOUT A GOOD PD ATARI 8-BIT EMULATOR

.for the Atari ST ..but have never seen one for the amiga..also I have
yet to see a Apple II emulator for the amiga.

Funny,

I was thinking about an Apple II emulator just this weekend, I thought
I'd seen a 6502 emulator on a fish disk somewhere, but when I checked
The Aquarium I couldn't spot one.

Fred Fish #92 AS6502 Assembler is all I can find.

You could always run the BBC emulator for 6502

Here is a bizarre solution for you. A usenet FTP sight has
an Atari emulator that someone successfully ran an Atari-based
Apple emulator on...

I was having problems running this emulator on my 68020, until I
discovered that by PowerPacking it to run in CHIP memory only, I got
    it to work.

There must be something about the timing on my A2620 that is throwing
    the emulator off.

Cliff Dugan plans to release a version of the emulator with sound
    sometime this month.
