4128.0. "Info for novice?" by CADSE::GILCHREST (timing is everything...) Mon Sep 17 1990 14:24

    Hi,

We (my family) are planning to get a "real" personal computer (we have
a C-64 now) in the coming months. Currently, we are considering an
Amiga (2000), a Mactintosh, or Head-Start or perhaps other IBM-clone
    (in that order).

For starters, we picked up some sales literature on Amigas; plus, I
figured this would be a great place to get more info. I've listed the
keywords and done a cursory scan of topic 9.1 trying to find topics
    that would be pertinent, i.e., to a less-than-novice. ;^) However, I
haven't come up with much so far... most of the subject titles are
    alien to me. ;^)

Can anyone point me to any topic(s) in here which provides helpful
introductory info? Likewise, is there a publication which would be
useful to me at this point?

Also, if anyone cares to, please express your thoughts on the merits of
an Amiga over the others. Btw, my son, who is in 8th grade, will be
the primary user; though, I plan to use it as well to do some C
    programming and letter/memo writing.

Thanks in advance for any info.

PS Moderator, don't hesitate to move this if there's already a related
    (similar) topic.

I just saw the October 1990 issue of Computer Buying Guide
published by Consumer Guide. They rate the Amiga 3000 as Best
Buy in the category of computers over $3000 over the Macintosh
IIcx and another 386 Blue-alike. The article was 2-3 pages long
and specifically recommended that purchasers considering a Mac
look at the Amiga before making a purchase decision.

The ratings were as follows:
    Overall Value - 10 Performance - 10
    Ease of Use - 10 Documentation - 10
    Software - 9 Expandability - 9
While you might quibble over the numbers this is definitely good
news for the Amiga community as it might influence non-techies
to look at the Amiga with such a strong recommendation coming
from a consumer rating organization with no apparent axes to grind.

In addition to the Amiga 3000 the same issue rated the A2000 and
A500 as good buys in their respective categories as well.

4128.3A2000 & Mac SE for saleVIA::CARROLLMon Sep 17 1990 20:5411
I am currently selling both my Amiga A2000 and my MAC SE. I love both
of them, but decided to sell them and buy the newer models. Both are in
excellent condition. If you are interested, you can leave me mail or
call me for more info. My home number is (508) 897-4637 (not before
11am!!!!) and my DEC number is 603-881-2586. I am usually at my desk
    around 1pm->.

I bought both of these computere at a developers discount, so I'll make
you a great deal if you (or anyone) is interested.

As I remember the quote, it recommends spending an afternoon with an
A3000 before buying ANY of the high-end systems.
