4107.1 | It works for me! | STAR::ROBINSON | | Wed Sep 12 1990 12:48 | 8 |
| I have used the MED v2.00 program without major problems. The only major
bug I found has to do with saving files with icons. If you shut off that
option it seems to work fine on my 1 meg A500 old Agnus. According to
usenet, last time I checked, a new version is available but is compressed
with some compression program that nobody has. If someone finds an updated
version that works let us know. It is a nice program.

4107.2 | It works | NMGV15::LOENDERSLOOT | | Wed Sep 26 1990 07:49 | 6 |
| I have downloaded the ff349 disk again (I'm lucky to be able to
download now directly from my dcl-account to a DECstation350 in MS-DOS
format) and it worked fine, but I'm still interested in the newer
version if somebody can find it.

4107.3 | MIDI <-> MED2.13 not working | FSCORE::KAYE | where's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-g | Tue Dec 04 1990 21:07 | 14 |
| I can't seem to get MED2.13 to talk to my MIDI keyboard. I built the
interface and have scoped data moving in both directions, but the
keyboard is silent & i'm not sure what MED is supposed to do with
keyboard input.
Sequence of events...
Start MED
Select MIDI - MIDI ACTIVE, INPUT ACTIVE, channel #1 (keyboard default)
Select SAMPLE - volume 32
Select EDIT - activate EDIT gadget
Play notes on the keyboard - nothing happens!
AM i missing something??

4107.4 | Cannot get v2.13 to function | DECWET::DAVIS | nice computers don't go down | Wed Dec 05 1990 11:43 | 6 |
| I have almost the opposite problem. I can get MED 2.00 to work but
MED2.13 either crashes or freezes my amiga. I had "Inventio8" playing
on my keyboard. Did you FTP MED2.13? If I can get another copy(I
FTP'd my copy from abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov) I will troubleshoot.

| I loaded MED2.00 from FF349 and then popped in MED2.13 from TAPE::
I didn't try MED2.00. I did try the Bars&Pipes Demo, but after i finally
figured out what i was doing and got a pipe going for MIDI input, it
hung and i had to reboot (twice). I need a quick utility just to let
me know that things are really working.

4107.7 | PD midi tools on one of the Fish. | DECWET::DAVIS | nice computers don't go down | Wed Dec 05 1990 17:33 | 9 |
| There are some PD midi tools on one of the Fish disks. I think it had
some sort of a midi monitor, i.e. showed you what was going out the
midi port.

ps I'll d/l med213 from tape tonight and try it soon. imagine has
caught my attention at the moment. :^)

4107.8 | running out of ideas! | FSCORE::KAYE | where's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-g | Wed Dec 05 1990 21:32 | 12 |
| I got MidiTools from FF227. If i select the keyboard & hit the keys
with the mouse i see lots of pulses going to my keyboard, but no
sounds. I tried Midi In to Midi Out, but it hung the machine just like
Bars&Pipes. I tried to send some program changes, nothing. I must
admit that a couple of times while 'mousing' the keyboard i did get a
sustained note from the keyboard. Is this a case of not enough current
to drive the receivers in the keyboard properly. I wired my own cables
straight thru (5<->5, 4<->4, ground on pin 2).
Any ideas welcome...

4107.9 | Home made cables | DECWET::DAVIS | nice computers don't go down | Thu Dec 06 1990 01:06 | 12 |
| I am using the ECE midi interface and wired my own cables also. All my
cables are about 15' long. They are not "midi spec" cables but they
work fine. I made them so long ago that I do not remember the
specifics but I did make sure that they were properly grounded.
Someone told me that grounding was critical. I believe I got the specs
from an old "electronic musician" magazine. I am d/l med tonight, I'll
see if it works for me. I would double check the cables, though.

| mark,
I tried med213 from TAPE:: and it locks up my machine also. Might be
due to my non-standard configuration. anyway, I found the article on
midi cables and 5<->5, 4<->4, 2<->2(shield) is the correct cabling. It
was mentioned that cross-connecting the conductors will "lock up" your
unit. It also gave a couple of simple cable testing circuits using 9v
batteries, 3 LEDs and 3 resistors. If you like, I will type them in.

4107.11 | problem found | FSCORE::KAYE | where's my Kama Sutra pop-up book for zero-g | Fri Dec 07 1990 08:49 | 8 |
| I found the problem. When i added the EIA <-> TTL converters they also
inverted the signal. I left all the other connections in, so i ended
up inverting the signal again thru the 7404. I bypassed the 7404 and
all works find. Sometimes i can be really dumb. I guess i gotta work
with this digital stuff all the time to keep the brain cells
refreshed.

4107.12 | MED mini-review | XSTACY::PATTISON | Dave | Mon Feb 25 1991 09:03 | 32 |

I've just discovered MED, after someone loaned me the use of the December
disk of "Amiga Computing". I think its V2.13..
I have to say I'm very impressed. Anyone who is considering forking out
loads of money for music-editing software should look at this, its a
fairly powerful piece of work, and (so far) robust and well written.
Its based on a similar program which I have also used called Soundtracker,
(also called Noisetracker originally) in that its the same 'style' of
editor. Its also reasonably compatible, you can load soundtracker modules
into it. Its MIDI compatable (which Soundtracker isn't). It uses the usual
IFF samples. Don't be put off by the reference to Soundtracker.. anyone
who has used Soundtracker will know its really frustrating to use. (To this
day I haven't figured out how to get it to load something off a different
disk!)
I've been using Mr. T's MRS up till now, but I'm beginning to think MED is
better, although MED notation is very unusual to say the least. You can't
think in MIDI terms when composing things though, its very much Amiga first
and MIDI second. I haven't played with it enough to find out what I can't
achieve MIDI-wise. The big advantage over MRS is block-editing. (ie you
edit small blocks, then put the blocks together in any sequence)
What really makes this program is the user interface. Although there is no
score-editing, you can get around MED with ease. All the commonly used
things have keystroke shortcuts. My only complaint would probably be that
cut and copy commands are too 'silent'.
Considering its been "given away" .. quite a bargain methinks.

4107.13 | MED (Music EDitor) V3.0 on TAPE:: | STAR::ROBINSON | | Wed Mar 20 1991 16:56 | 8 |

I just sent the new version of the MED music editor to TAPE. This
vesion is much larger than past versions and includes sample editing,
a demo, and a bunch of samples in the archive. I haven't tried it
yet cause I just got it by FTP. The LZH file lists OK on VMS and
some USENET folks are giving MED3.0 good reviews.
