Mr Moderator, Sir
I know that this message is not pertinent to this notes conference,
but where else would I find access to a bunch of like minded and generous
people. Thus, I ask you not to set this note hidden until after the 23rd of
September 1989 when I will close it by telling you how much money we raised.
Yours respectfully
David East

Subj: SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE!!!!!!!
Dear friends, Colleagues, & AMIGOES
On September the 25th 1989, Mary ,my wife, underwent a 2nd Liver
Transplant in Kings College Hospital LONDON. Now, nearly a year later she is
in excellent health and leading a normal life. Each of Mary's life saving
operations were carried out under the National Health and cost around
10,000 pounds, but the operation is only the beginning, each patient must take
anti rejection and other drugs for the rest of their lives, a non trivial
ongoing expense for the NHS.
There are many causes of Liver failure but amongst the most
common are the various forms of Hepatitus. We can be treated and receive
vaccinations against Hepatitus A and B, and recently doctors have managed
to isolate Hepatitus C, but there are many more forms ( known as Hepatitius
Non A, non B) as yet unrecognised and therefore untreated. Transplantation is a
last resort, when the virus has won and the patients life is in danger. Kings
College Hospital has around 70 doctors doing research into the causes of
liver failure, in an effort to reduce the number of transplants necessary, to
win the battle against rejection and improve the aftercare of patients.
I will be forever grateful to the doctors and nurses of Kings
College Hospital, without them, Mary would not be enjoying the quality of
life she has today. So it is time to show my appreciation and give
something back, but I need your help.
I spent much of 1989 travelling between my home near Newbury and
Kings College Hospital in London a distance of approx 75 miles. On September
23rd I propose to do it again. This time by Bicycle and in aid of Liver Research
at Kings.
Please sposnsor me generously. You can do this in a number of ways.
When we meet, I'm bound to have a sponsor form on me.
or
Why not stick 10, Dollars, Francs, Marks, Pounds, or whatever you can
spare in an envelope and mail it to me.
