| We use Courier HST/V.32 modems (running at 19200) here in Boxboro. I
set these up, and they've been working very well for us. We upload and
download all the time, and a couple of the guys even run async DECnet
through them to VAXstations at home. We also use them for dialing out
from BXB.
It sounds like the SHR modems and/or LAT ports aren't configured
properly, but it's hard to determine from the symptoms you describe.
For reference, I'll attach a dump of the setup info from one of our
modems and a LAT port. Compare these with the ones in SHR, maybe you
can spot something...

Ed,
As you know I will be moving into the same building in 2 weeks.
I have already checked out the phone lines and found the same problems.
Operations gave me a special set of phone numbers that are set-up for
data transfer.

| Don't know if this will help you much but I also have a 9600 baud modem
(a Netcomm SmartModem M5) and use it dial BBS's in Brisbane. (We only
have 2400 baud lines into work!!). In all but one of BBS's they turn
of MNP because of all the problems that they get with it.
Shaun. (Who still has'nt seen MNP running on his modem)

Yeh, Ed. You can forget about dialing directly to SHR numbers. I've been
trying to get a 2400 baud modem to work since we moved in - no go.
The phone lines in SHR are as NOISY as it gets. I've complained several
times. We can't even get our FAX to work...

| 2400??? You people should all consider your selves lucky. I've got a
2400 at home, but only at 1200! at work. Sloooooow to say the least.

I've also been told that there are no plans to upgrade Connecticut TSN

Well, the beauty of the Telcor modem is that line noise is a thing of
the past! I can stay connected for hours without a single } or @
popping onto the screen.
I plan on giving operations an earful.

Good! Do it Ed. The more people that complain the more chance we have of them
fixing it. This is a brand new building and noisy lines are just plain
unacceptable!
When I dial in either directly (toll call) or via FX, I get a *constant stream*
of {}(^# comming back!
