I can tell where you can find .gif files that you can convert !!

4070.2 | .gif and any other format | DECWET::DAVIS | You always get what you deserve | Sat Sep 01 1990 18:11 | 5 |
| That would be ok. Now to read through the Gif conversion notesfiles
again unless someone wants to recommend the ULTIMATE gif conversion
software. I am leaning toward The Art Dept.

> I am leaning toward The Art Dept.
So do I! TAD does a remarkably superior job for me than any other I
have found plus it is orders of magnitude more flexible. The high res
interlaced 16 color version of the astronaut spacewalking direct from
the GIF is an astounding example of this.

4070.4 | do you use the GIF loader | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Tue Sep 04 1990 06:44 | 9 |
| I also use,and like TAD. Remember though, TAD will not load GIF
directly without the purchase of the GIF loader. I have been converting
to RGB using GiftoRGB,then loading the file. re .2 are you converting,
or do you have the GIF loader ? If you have the loader could you give
some info on it's features ? Recently I have been looking for pictures
I can use on distributable material. I don't believe many of the
pictures that are available meet this criteria. I plan to make a trip
to the library,and see what is available.(copyright has expired etc).
Can anyone offer any info on sources for pics of this nature ?

4070.5 | | NSSG::SULLIVAN | Steven E. Sullivan | Tue Sep 04 1990 10:46 | 9 |
| I am using the GIF module for TAD. Just like any other TAD module...
just loads up the file in 8 or 24 bit format!
The quality of the result is very much like using GIF2RGB to make a
24bit deep IFF file, then loading it into TAD. Using the GIF loader saves
lots of disk space and is much more convenient than GIF2RGB. Either will
work, but for less than $40 I think the GIF loader is a steal!

4070.6 | have to get it | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Tue Sep 04 1990 12:36 | 4 |
| I guess I'll have to invest in the Gif loader. Money is tight this
month (birthday + N.H.= broke),but I'll work at it. I did not realize
they were shipping the GIF loader yet.

4070.7 | If you're serious, you might want to wait on that GIF loader... | TENAYA::MWM | | Tue Sep 04 1990 14:29 | 18 |
| TAD Professional is out (or should be out soon). The press releases I've
seen indicate that it comes with the GIF loader. The upgrade cost is $75,
meaning that it's only slightly more expensive than two loaders.
On the plus side, it comes with an ARexx interface, so you can program it to
convert a directory full of pictures while you're doing something else. (That's
the main reason I haven't ordered the GIF loader - I want that ARexx interface!)
It also comes with a collection of other loaders, and the ability to save
to those formats as well as load from them. Finally, it's got hooks to
talk to lots of different output devices, writing direct from the 24-bit
image.
Summary: if you're thinking about buying _any_ loaders for TAD, you should
check out the PRO version. It might save you money in the long run. If you're
sure you're only going to buy that one loader, then it's probably not worth
it.

re .7
Thanks for the Tip. I'll save the cost of the Gif loader toward the
pro update. That sounds exciting to me. The added ability to convert to
and from the various graphic formats alone is mindboggling,and this
with arexx support!!!!! I plan to call ASDG for info on any updates to
tad ,and see what they say. $75.00 is actually cheap if you look at it
from the purchasing loaders aspect. Of course if you run a graphics
based business this program is a godsend,and I am sure the equal in the
Mac,or IBM world would come quite a bit steeper. Now there is a great
opportunity for an enterprising soul.

4070.10 | limit of ten pics | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Fri Sep 07 1990 08:19 | 20 |
| In talking with ASDG I found that TAD now comes with the Sculpt,and
Impulse loaders included. They make a point of saying these were
included free on the packaging. Now if I want this upgrade 1.0.2
it will take my orginal disk,and $25.00. I think that if a person
purchases the first revision of a product they should have a better
deal in an instance like this. If the price of the software had
increased I could see charging the $25.00. But this is not the case.
I am calling today to express my thoughts. I'll wait and upgrade to the
professional version.
Well I took a trip to the library,and it paid off. I found a book
on antique brass weathervanes. The pics are in grayscale,and scan
great. They have a very high degree of detail. I scaned a dragon as
my test case. In the copyright notice it stated that because these
pictures were part of an archive, you could use up to ten in any one
publication without permission. (clipart books offer this also)
On the shelf next to it was another book with many of the same pics
that stated you could not use the pictures. Guess which book I took
home ! You cannot duplicate these for inclusion in another art
distribution package though.

TAD (The Art Dept.), and also who is ASDG?

| Most amiga dealers carry TAD. I know the Software Shop had it in stock Saturday.
Last time I was in Memory Location in Wellsley MA they had it. The Software
shop does mail order and has an ad in Amiga World.

4070.20 | Superview, anyone? | WHAMMY::SPODARYK | Scaring the pedestrians... | Wed Sep 19 1990 00:52 | 9 |
| A while ago (couple of weeks maybe?) I remember seeing a pointer to
a new version of superview. Is this true, or have I completely lost
it? I can't seem to find it in any of the "normal" locations.
What are some of your favorite .iff viewers. Superview has been my
choice (due to speed mainly), but I'm really finding a lot of bugs
lately. I'm hoping some of them have been fixed.

4070.21 | Try Mostra | DECWET::DAVIS | You always get what you deserve | Wed Sep 19 1990 02:21 | 9 |
| I ditched superview for Mostra. It will also view Dyna-Ham(if you have
the viewer in your search path) and sliced-ham pictures. If the
picture is larger than your screen size it allows you to "scroll
around" the picture, plus a whole lot of extras. It also loads and
views pictures much faster than superview. I still use superview
occasionally for running animations but Mostra is my "main" viewing
utility. I believe the version of superview I use is 3.0.

4070.22 | make sure you get latest version | SALEM::LEIMBERGER | | Wed Sep 19 1990 06:31 | 15 |
| re .18
I saw the latest version of TAd at System Eyes. It is 2.0
compatable,and has the loaders for Impulse,and the other popular 3D
rendering(sorry mental block) included. Steve has also placed an order
for the professional version. I booted it on the 3000 with 2.0 and it
looked real nice. I will upgrade to the professional as soon as I get
the mailer. ASDG are the people that gave us the original recoverable
ram disk. I have their JX100 scanner,and the software they developed
for it.(scanner is made by Sharp). ASDG puts out a level of quality
that should serve as an example for many developers. Funny how they
keep the use of menus to a minimum and still offer one of the most user
friendly packages around. Pixel 3D also uses a non amiga interface that
belies the power of the software in it's ease of use. Don't buy TAD
unless you know it is version 2.0 .
