Yup, ZAP is alot like warp, only you can set the time/compression
ratio.
If you want it quick, the file will be huge, if you want it small,
it'll take a while.

| Thanks Steve. Now the *big* question; who's got a version for the Amiga
that they're willing to upload? I've searched around the usual places,
but the only ZAP I could find (CGOU01""::AMNEW:ZAP.ZOO) is a sector
editor which consistently gurus my machine. I suppose I'll take a peek
in the Fred Fish catalog, but if anyone has a pointer I'd appreciate
it. I've got a demo I'd like to upload that's in ZAP format, but I'd
like to at least preview it first...
Thanks,
Pete

Thanks Steve, but I guess I should have checked at home (of all
places!) for ZAP first before searching here; seems I downloaded ZAP
1.41 from some (Consultron's?) BBS several weeks ago and totally spaced
it. However, if you haven't done so already, please do so when you get
the chance. Perhaps I've got a bum copy, but I haven't had much luck
unpacking the demo in question (a playable demo of a Monty Python
game). The operation completes without error (complete with home-brew
bootblock) and boots and runs (as far as I can tell) but the graphics
and sound are all messed up. I can make out a few images and the
sampled sounds are okay, but the rest is scrambled eggs. Perhaps
there's an older/newer version that might do the trick. FWIW, the demo
is MONTS451.ZAP (packed with ZAP 1.40). I'd like to prove that it works
as advertised before uploading, but maybe someone else will have better
luck. I'll decide after another night of oxide scraping...

| Pete,
The symptoms you describe (trashed graphics and sound) are what you
might find when the program isn't written to correctly deal with "fast"
RAM. Try running the NoFastRam program before starting the game...?

I'm going to upload ZAP.ARC to tape::user2:[upload] in a couple of
minutes.
It's V1.40.

Re: .10
Thanks Bruce, I did just that (via NOFASTMEM) because there's a banner
that comes up when you boot the disk ("menu.exe" displays the text file
"menu") that says;
"TURN OFF EXTRAMEM & EXTERNAL DRIVES!"
This is pretty lame nowadays (IMHO) even for a demo, especially when
there isn't any software included to do this. I copied NOFASTMEM to the
disk and ran it before the demo, but same results. I downloaded it
again last night and am going to give it another go.
Re: .11
Thanks Steve, I just finished uploading ZAP V1.41 as:

Well, it's time for me to insert ye old foot in mouth (again). It seems
that during my late night downloading/unschrunching flurry the other
night, I made a blunder. Before knowing what ZAP was (having downloaded
it from the same BBS the week before and not realizing it; duh!), I
used NEWZAP to peek around in the .ZAP file and saw some ASCII
referring to "VIRUS KILLER" and using my powerful pea-sized brain,
decided to set the destination floppy's boot block back to "normal"
once I unZAP'ed the source file. Well, that VIRUS KILLER was not just
fluff, but also contained a utility section to do just what I was
whining about earlier, that is disable external drives and "extra"
memory. Apologies to Marc of SlipStream; this is a slick utility (more
details in the note announcing the Python demo).
Crawling back into the woodwork,
Pete
