4004.0. "Help needed fast, System problems." by SHARE::DOYLE () Fri Aug 10 1990 09:47

  Well, I finally got my SCSI controler, it was a second hand GVP card,
 "Impact A2000-2/X".
   But I'm having problems....
   I have an A500 with A501 and a Pacific Peripheral's Subsystem, inside the
  Subsystem, I have a 8meg Supra memory expansion card.
   The Subsystem also contains a disk drive and has it's own power supply.

   The Supra has 2 megs installed.
   The GVP has room for 2 megs, however they are empty and the board is properly
 configured for 0meg installed.
   I have been able to run my harddrive with both cards in, but....
   When the GVP is recognized, the Supra isn't. (My Extra 2 megs don't show up)
   When the Supra is recognized, the GVP doesn't show.

  Now here's the strange part, when I first installed the card (GVP) in my
subsystem, I didn't have my Hard-Drive Attached.
  When I powered up, I got a blank white screen and a flashing power LED.
  I believe this means that there isn't enough power to the system.
  (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
  So I attached the drive and the separate power supply to the drive.
  I turned on the drive then the subsystem then my A500.
  It came up with the Insert Workbench Screen.
  I then booted the GVP Utilities disk.
  When the workbench came up, I could see the system wasn't recognizing my
  Supra card, as it only showed about 800k.
  I then succesfully formatted my disk drive into 4 20 meg partitions.
   I powered down the unit, then switched the cards around.
   I thought perhaps one had to be installed before the other on the buss.
   I powered back up, and my memmory card was recognized but my hard drive
   wasn't.
   I soft booted it, and recieved a white screen with a flashing power led.

 Could somebody with more experience help me with this?
   I only have 2 days two decide if I can use this or not, because I bought
it on consignment from System Eye's.
   I'm think perhaps it's a weak power supply.
   When both cards are recognized on the buss, this appears to overload the
 system.
   When one or the other isn't, it seems to operate correctly.
   I base my "guess" on the following.

   1. (if) The GVP card is placed before the Supra on the buss, it either
  locks out the Supra or simply gets enough power to run, but deprives the
  Supra of enough power to make it Invisible to the system.

   2. (if) The Supra is first on the buss, it gets enough power to run
  (somewhat ie: warm boot failure). On warmboot however, the System hangs
  Once the GVP card is recognized on the buss (probably draws more power
 anyhow).
      *note subsequent cold power ups resulted in white screen/flashing power
 LED.

   3. The power supply for the Subsystem ran unusually hot.

	Thank you for any insight you may be able to provide....

4004.1No hope yet...SHARE::DOYLEFri Aug 10 1990 14:4819
 Update....

    Called Supra, technician didn't know why the cards wouldn't work.
    He said that the flashing power led and white screen might be some kind
   of autoboot error.
    Suggested trying cards in a 2000, to see if it was the expansion chassis.

    Called GVP, technician suggested that the Expansion chassis had too much
 noise on the buss for both cards to operate properly.
    He didn't know what a flashing power LED and white screen could be.

    Called System Eye's, no idea what could be wrong, could be a jumper.

    Called Pacific Peripheral, number no longer in service....

                                                    Why me....

4004.2WILARD::BARRETTThis is my brain on Notes.Sat Aug 11 1990 11:2813
    There have been notes concerning SupraRAM not working with some
    disk controllers in the 2000 rev 6 systems. Granted that your situation
    is a little different; but you may want to read all the notes
    referencing "Supra" to see if it sheds any light on it. I know in
    one case the problem was solved by changing to a Microbotics memory
    board.

    On the otherhand; I have a SupraRAM 2000 working quite well in a
    Rev 6.2B system with CBM A2090a controller, so who knows.

    I would suggest trying different combinations of which card is first
    in the bus and placing some blank slots or other hardware between
    them to reduce conflict.
4004.3It is slot "sensitive"SHARE::DOYLESat Aug 11 1990 12:2921
     re:-1

       The Subsystem only has 2 slots.

      I lost (my wife cleaned) my documentation to it a while ago, so I
    don't remember wich is actualy closer to the expansion port on the
    subsystem.
      I do know that if I put the GVP SCSI adapter in the slot "physically"
    further from the expansion buss, the SCSI adapter works.
      If I switch the cards, the memory card (Supra) comes up or I'm
    greeted with a white screen and flashing power led.
      On usenet, someone said they were having problems with a two card
    config. until they beefed up the power supply on the subsystem.
      The supply on the subsystem is rated at 50 watts max. I think (don't
     recall offhand) that it rates somthing like 6amps at 5v ,3.6amps at 12v
     and .38amps at -12v.
      The GVP card pulls 2.2amps, but I don't know what the Supra card
    requires for amperage.

4004.4Subsystem AddendumSHARE::DOYLESat Aug 11 1990 13:0513
    Another point I should mention....

    The floppy drive in the Subsystem is power hungry, and is powered off
    of the subsystem power supply.
     For instance...
      If I shut off the power to the subsystem, but leave the floppy drive
    connected to the A500 then reboot, the Workbench appears, but DF0: will not
    boot my workbench disk.. Although it try's to read the disk.

4004.5Some slot swapping results.SHARE::DOYLEMon Aug 13 1990 09:2139
  Well, a friend of mine told me that my power supply is strong enough to run
both boards, and the drive.
  So I experimented with some more combinations.

      If I put the Supra in the First slot (physically closer to the buss)
      and leave the 2nd slot empty, the memory card works.

      If I put the Supra in the First slot and the GVP in the Second slot and
      leave all the peripherals un-attached (disk drive, printer, modem)
      I get a white screen and my DF0: drive won't recognize that I put any
      Disk in the drive (no click, no nothin).

      If I put the Supra in the First slot and the GVP in the Second slot and
      leave the peripherals all in, I get a white screen, and a flashing power
      L.E.D.

      If I put the GVP in the First slot and leave the second slot free, the
      Hard-drive autoboots fine.

      If I put the GVP in the First slot and put the Supra in the Second, the
      Hard-drive autoboots fine, the Supra8meg is ignored.

      If I put either card in the second slot and leave the first slot empty,
      they are both ignored.

      If anyone out there has a subsystem, I'd like to get a copy of the docs
      from you, as I stated earlier, mine are lost.. and the Manufacturers
      phone has been disconected.
       Perhaps something in the documentation would be helpful. Maybe the
     Autoboot needs to be disabled from the hard-drive?..
       Maybe in order to use the second slot.. the first has to be filled?
       Maybe the second slot has a bad trace somewhere?
       I've read through almost every hard-drive, help, memory, gvp, supra,
      subsystem note in this conferance and others with no results.

						Thanks again for any help;

4004.6sounds slot-relatedSAUTER::SAUTERJohn SauterMon Aug 13 1990 11:0810
    re: .5

    The fact that either card works in the first slot with the second
    empty, and neither card works in the second slot with the first empty
    points to a problem with the second slot. Possibly, as you suggested,
    a bad trace. Try using an ohmmeter to verify that all of the pins
    that should be connected through between the slots have 0 ohms between
    them, and all other combinations have lots of ohms. You'll probably
    need the schematic to do this, though.

4004.7Bus TerminationMEALA::COLLINSSTEVEMon Aug 13 1990 12:3619

    Here's my guess...

    I dont think the second slot is bad just because neither board will
    work in it , I think this is because you you need a module in the first
    slot or a jumper to pass an autoconfig signal.

    I think it may be caused by excessive noise/loading on the bus .I'm
    not sure how you can best verify this except to look at the bus signals
    with a scope or to terminate the bus. Does the expansion chassis you
    have terminate the bus ?

    Steve..
    good bus terminator.

4004.8Terminates with Passthrough?SHARE::DOYLEMon Aug 13 1990 12:458
    RE:-1

    	 If by buss termination you mean that it has some type of end on
    it, no it doesn't.
         It ends with a pass-through thats identical to the one on the
    A500.
