| 4003.1 | Check cables | CSSE32::SMITH | Reality, just a visible imagination? | Thu Aug 09 1990 14:01 | 5 |
| | Perhaps you should check that the power and drive cable are connected
    properly on the drive and the mother board. If ok then it's likely the
    floppy controller IC. Does the drive LED come on?

| 4003.2 | yes and no | MUSKIE::GAINES |  | Thu Aug 09 1990 16:18 | 5 |
| | Yes Ed. Now that you mention it it does on the internal drive. But
    always returns "DF0:BAD". The external drive Does not get an LED
    ti light. It does nothing. Hmmmmmm.

| 4003.3 | Disk Formatted?? | SALEM::LEIMBERGER |  | Fri Aug 10 1990 04:52 | 11 |
| | The internal disk drive will always return DF0:BAD if a unformatted
    disk is inserted. Did you insert a disk,and then when you get the
    df0:bad icon on the workbench, select initalize from the workbench
    menu? Does your external drive have a disable switch on it? Some
    come with a switch that allow you to disable the disk to spare
    memory on the system. If you have a switch flip it and reoot.
    	If you were to run crossdos you would get DF0:bad,and an
    icon for DI0: if an ibm disk is inserted,and a DI0:bad, with an
    icon for DF0: when an amiga disk is inserted. This is said to be
    going away with 2.0 of the OS.

| 4003.4 | working now, 1 more question. | CARP::GAINES |  | Mon Aug 13 1990 10:21 | 20 |
| | Well this probelm is solved! Ed, the DF0:bad error would occurr
    on known formatted disks. So this was not the problem. Apparently
    the 1st internal disk is slightly different than 2nd drives installed.
    The connectors were topsy turvey on the original 1st than on the
    2nd. Anyhow I found that if I disconnected the original disk that
    I could read from my external drive fine. If I connected the controller
    cable back up at anytime to the internal disk the external disk would
    not function.

    I took my spare internal floppy and connected it and disconnected the
    original! Looks fine, I can use the newly installed internal and
    external floppy ok. The origanl floppy is certainly bad...

    On my Amiga 500 the internal drive was DF0 and the external was
    DF1. Now with my 2000 the internal is DF0 and the external is
    DF2. Why? and how do I get the external to show up as DF1?

    Regards

|  |     The 2000 has a built-in drive-logic for DF1: on the motherboard.
    If you connect a drive on the external connector it will show up
    as DF2:. If you connect a drive inside it will show up as DF1:
    For an external drive you also need an external drive logic/diskchange-
    "emulator". I grabbed an old NEC1036a added the external logic and it
    works fine.
    Have a look at the original DEVS:MountList on your AmigaDOS-Disk.
    It shows how to "map" unit 2 on the name DF1:

| | Addendum to .5 The drive logic for DF1 on the mother board is disabled
    by a missing jumper to keep the latch cir from responding when the drive
    does not exits. Its on the prints right next to the Gary chip (Floppy
    section) and floppy connector. Can not remember the page sorry.

AH HA!  Thanks Alan!
I've been trying to get a second floppy on the internal floppy connection in
my 2500 and it never see's it (works fine as DF0: minus the diskchange...)
