3974.2 | composite video for 2000 | STAR::SLACK | | Tue Jul 31 1990 10:29 | 8 |

from your 2000. I know these boards must be like hen's teeth, but I
need a solution cheaper than buying a genlock.
Suggestions welcome.

3974.4 | Need 1.3 Kickstart ROM | WBC::BAKER | Mutants on the Bounty | Tue Jul 31 1990 12:30 | 19 |
|
I'm going mad looking for a 1.3 Kickstart ROM. I've finally
got a nice, sexy autobootable controller in my 2000, but I
can't take full advantage of it without the 1.3 ROM.
The local dealers are of two varieties: "Yes, we have it in
stock; it costs $75, but there's no installation charge;" and
"Yes, we have it in stock; it's $50, but we have to do the
installation."
My favorite mail-order houses, Safe Harbor and the GrapeVine
Group, both say that Commodore is shipping the little beasties
"erratically," which doesn't sound good.
Does anyone have an extra 1.3 ROM they'd sell me ? Or do you
know of someplace that will ship me one for a reasonable price ?
Thanks,
Art

3974.7 | Controllers wanted. | AYOV28::ATHOMSON | C'mon, git aff! /The Kelty Clippie | Wed Aug 01 1990 17:29 | 14 |
| I am looking for a couple of SCSI controllers, either 1 for the A2000
and 1 for the A500 or 2 for the A500.
The simpler (& cheaper) the better, (they don't have to have space for
more ram or anything like that...)
If possible I'd like the A2000 one to be a A2090 or A2090(a) because
I've an ST506 drive too.
I'd also be grateful for any comments on A500 SCSI controllers, best,
worst, cheapest, most expensive, fastest, slowest etc...

Actually, you want the A2091, since the A2090 models implemented SCSI
wrong. The A2091 fixes the problem, which SERIOUSLY degraded system
performance under certain circumstances.
> I'd also be grateful for any comments on A500 SCSI controllers, best,

I'm quite pleased with the A590, which provides a built-in 20MB ST506
drive (that you can replace with a SCSI drive), true DMA (as opposed to
several of its competitors), and sockets for up to 2MB of expansion RAM
(it uses 4x256K CMOS). It's the logical equivalent of the A2091, but
packaged in a unit that matches the A500's lines.

Actually, they implemented SCSI ok. It was the way they implemented DMA across
the Zorro bus that caused it to have trouble when the custiom chips took
up all the bandwidth (like with hires overscan or something like that).

I just purchased the new Supra 500XP which allows for 8Mb ram

I will probably price the SCSI controller at $130.00, the ram at $230.00, and
the Adaptec at $125.00.

3974.11 | Archon patch found? | MSVAX::BARRETT | I will not skateboard in the halls | Thu Aug 02 1990 15:37 | 16 |
| In reference to the ARCHON patch I was looking for, I came up with the
following information:
The "fixarchon" program on abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov (the replacement
machine for xanth.cs.odu.edu; 128.155.23.64) allows Archon to run fine on
my A1000 under KS 1.3, with expansion memory.
Does anyone have this or can obtain it for me? Also; if it is in
"SHAR" format, could you unshar it also (I've never had good luck
doing that). Thanks!!!!

OOOOPS. I meant 3.5", sorry.
I posted this for a friend. I should point out that he is looking
to spend around $75 at most on this. He's hoping that between flea markets
and 10-20meg ST506 drives that people don't need, that he can pick
up something to give his system more than the 5.25" 20meg he has.
He's looking to either add a 3.5" with ANY capacity to increase
the total available space, or replace his 20 meg 5.25" with a bigger one.

3974.21 | Fix Archon Works! | MCDONL::BARRETT | I must not waste bandwidth | Sun Aug 12 1990 20:31 | 14 |

I tried the FixArchon patch -- it works great! It says it
requires external RAM. I don't know what that
means exactly (perhaps someone could clarify). In my fatter Agnus
3 meg system (which I assume it disabled the 2 meg fastram to work), it
worked fine.
It does produce a strange screen of white garbage when the archon
disk is first booted; but after a couple of seconds that vanishes
and the "EA" logo appears.
Thanks John - one item crossed off my list.

No, actually the problem is that my XT bridgeboard decided it was
time to pass on. It's acting flaky and producing constant PROM checksum
errors. It's a very old rev (has wired ECO's on the back), so I'm
looking for a replacement. It's amazing, but all my hardware seemed
to fail about the same time. First the motherboard, then the ST506,
and now the XT board. Hope this doesn't happen again in another
3.5 years.

3974.59 | Wanted: A2500 | AKOFIN::TANG | What!,..... me worry? | Fri Sep 27 1991 19:28 | 58 |
| Greetings,
I am placing this notice for my boss, who's son is looking for an
Amiga as he is going to some kind of Art/Design program at college. ;-p
The following information has been passed down to me from boss/son/prof
in that order. Apparently, most of the students have found the following
configuration to be acceptable. I don't know anything about Amigas,
if it were about DEC equipment or PC-compatibles, I could have at least
understood what is wanted here:
Sought:
Amiga 2500 with at least a 40Mb drive. (so far, I can follow this ;-) )
Raster graphics (? is this software or hardware? or just a description
of the kind of graphics the monitor provides? if H/W, is
this the standard C= 1080/1902 monitors? is the VR241
useable w/cable mods to drive RGB/sync inputs?)
Gen 2000 board (is this an accelerator board? is this known by another
name? is this a 68030 board? or completely different?)
Is this the same as Supergen? what is Supergen?
I've read some, as many notes as can be read in one work day, and it
appears that some local excess Dec equipment might be able to be used
with a little work/mods........RDxx disks, LA50/75/100 printers, maybe
even an LN03 PSprinter or just a straight LN03? and VR241 is okay, but
maybe not the VR291?
But, after all is said and done, what my boss needs is to purchase a
system for his 18 y.o. son to use, not really for him to piece meal
together. So, if anyone is willing to provide more info on this, please
do so, all will be appreciated.
Info such as what would this config roughly go for new? used/2nd hand?
He's gotten some quote ~ $US 5200 for new and ~ $US 2750 for used! :-(
Also, if anyone has such a config or willing to sell equipment/software
that would contribute to making this config, I'm sure the boss would
be willing to consider such offers. Again, thanks for your patience
as I am not at all familiar with C= Amigas.
One last thing, it occurs to me that even a lower model such as A1000
or even A500 might be able to be upgraded to near A2500 level. Is
this true? is it fairly doable? Would it be less expensive or more so?
and would this provide more headaches in migrating upward than it is
worth? I take it from what little I've read that an A3000 is some kind
of bounded system not really preferable for expandability, while at
least the A2000 could be expanded more readily? not so?
thanks and best regards,
-gabe

A2620's?).
I've read some, as many notes as can be read in one work day, and it
FWIW, I beleive I saw a utility in the Toolshed ($ VTX TOOLSHED) that
allows you to do a VAXnotes "search" in batch mode. This might help you
out a bit when traversing this conference; helps find things that a
"dir/title=" and/or keywords won't find.
Info such as what would this config roughly go for new? used/2nd hand?
 He's gotten some quote ~ $US 5200 for new and ~ $US 2750 for used! :-(
This sounds rather steep to me, so I'd shop around. BTW, since he (the
"son") is/will be a student, he should be eligible for CBM's educational
discount, which is quite good (it's still available, isn't it?). That
info is in here somewhere...
One last thing, it occurs to me that even a lower model such as A1000
or even A500 might be able to be upgraded to near A2500 level. Is
this true? is it fairly doable? Would it be less expensive or more so?
While this method can be a lot cheaper, it's not nearly as seamless as
having an A2xxx box with lots of slots and a pretty hefty power supply.
If the owner loves to tinker with hardware, itsa blast, but for the
turn-key user, the A2xxx is the way to go. Also, the latter has a video
slot built in, which is required for things like the Supergen 2000.
worth? I take it from what little I've read that an A3000 is some kind
of bounded system not really preferable for expandability, while at
least the A2000 could be expanded more readily? not so?
Yes and no. While currently there's a few cards that won't fit in the
A3000 that do fit in the A2000 (the Video Toaster seems to be a popular
example), the A3000 has a lot to offer, especially if he can somehow
qualify for the "Power-Up" program (discussed lots of places in here).
If you can, try to get a more specific description (hardware and
software) of the system that he is looking for; that will quickly
narrow things down.
Hope this helps,
Pete

My son is in the process of buying an Amiga 2000 through a local dealer
using the educational discount. By that price list, the A2500/50
(which has BOTH M68000 and 16MHz M68020 CPUs, 5MB RAM, and a 50MB
SCSI hard disk) costs $2687, NEW. On the other hand, the A3000-25/50
(which starts with 2MB of RAM, upgradable to 18MB, a 25MHz M68030 CPU,
and the same 50MB hard disk on a 32-bit SCSI controller) costs $2547,
also NEW. There's a genlock available (not on the list in front of me,
because my son wasn't interested in it) for $100 or so. The "standard"
Commodore 1084S monitor runs $282.

We'd be HAPPY to make you a convert. 8^) Something's TERRIBLY wrong
with the quote -- could it be that there's some MAJOR component
missing?

Indeed, the A500 can be stretched to meet these needs. You're working
"outside the design envelope" to do so. (Adding a 3rd party CPU card
in place of the standard M68000 is common, but sometimes conflicts with
other expansions in addition to voiding the A500 warranty.)

3974.63 | Flight Simulator II RIP | PIANST::JANZEN | Love looks not with the eyes | Tue Oct 29 1991 14:25 | 9 |
| Hi. I spoke to SubLogic in Illinois last night; they have no more
scenery disk for Flight Simulator II, but they will sell you
Flight Simulator II. I should have bought the scenery while I could.
If anyone has FSII scenery other than Western Europe, I will
negotiate buying it.
has anyone reverse-engineered the scenery disk?
I had heard a toolkit was being prepared but was cancelled.
I have started trying to disassemble it. I may not have the patience.
