3954.1 | I suspect file format problems | STAR::ROBINSON | | Wed Jul 25 1990 13:21 | 23 |
| Steve,
The version of MYLA50.ARC that is on is WJG::AMIGA: seems to be exactly
the same as one that I have in my directory. I downloaded the one I have and
used it successfully. I suspect your problem has to do with file formats
that are not compatible with your downloading scheme. This has been explained
many times in the conference, and I can't do as good a description right here.
Basically, you need to make sure the file you down load is in variable format
for KERMIT (unless you specify block mode), stream_lf for xmodem, and either
for zmodem. From VMS type DIR/FULL to see the format.
Also, the VMS ARC.EXE can't look at variable format files even though
that may be what you want to send with KERMIT.
The VMS tool CVTARC.EXE will
let you change between formats. Define it as a foreign command.
Also remember that there is a file name length restriction with ARC.
This can bite you if you rename the file.
Good luck.

| Trouble is all the copies I have been able to lay my hands on appear
corrupt. I have copied it from both TAPE: and WJG: the copy from WJG:
I've got one at CRISTA""::AMIGA: that's good, but I'm sure I copied it
from TAPE:: or WJG:: so I don't think that's the problem. What are you
using to download the arc files? If you are using Kermit or xmodem, you
must be sure that the file structure is correct. Fixed-length records
for Kermit and stream-linefeed for xmodem (SET FILE TYPE BLOCK within
Kermit works with stream-LF files also). CVTARC will straighten that
out in a jiffy. I prefer zmodem since it is not picky about file type.
Also, check the arc file before you unpack it via ARC T arc-name. I
just tried downloading it via Kermit (file type binary and block) and
xmodem. The only problem was with xmodem; the last file in the arc
(render.asm) reported a CRC error, but this is because the version I
used is most likely truncating it (the arc needs to be padded to "even
out" the packets). In all cases, UUD worked without error on la50.uue.

3954.3 | IT WORKS!!! | GIDDAY::ROHAN | Middleaged Mutant DEC Engineer | Sun Jul 29 1990 09:22 | 11 |
| Thanks for your help Dave, Pete,
I tried the copy from WJG: again and unpacked it on the amiga instead
of using VMSSWEEP. This time it worked. I then copied it back to the
VAX using JRCOMMs and UUDECODEed it - worked.
And it did solve the problem. I still think the copy on TAPE: is sus as
I tried it at least 3 times and could not UUDECODE it. The other
posibility is that VMSSWEEP was altering the file so that UUDECODE
couldn't work. I will experiment a little later.
...Thanks Steve

Just a WAG; did you change the printer preferences to point PRT at the
serial port and for preferences to select the new driver?

Hi Pete,
yes, i did exactly that. We are using WB 1.3 and i seem to
remeber someone claiming that the printer.dev (could be wrong
here) must be copied from WB 1.2
Still hoping . . .
Thanks

3954.9 | Where can I find WB 1.2 devs:printer.device | KERNEL::TRAVELL | John T, UK_Remote_Services_Support | Sun Oct 06 1991 21:56 | 15 |

I only have WB 1.3, I do not know where I can obtain a copy of WB 1.2
devs:printer.device.
Could a copy be made available on the net, would permission from C= be needed ?
I have MYLA50.ARC, and also something called LA50_FIX.ARC. I cannot now
remember what this latter file is for.
I transfer the files to the (my son's) Amiga via PCDISK to an RX23, then PCcopy
into RAMdisk & finally to an AmigaDOS floppy.
Does anyone have any idea what format the files need to be in for this to work
properly ??

You might try looking on some of your application floppies. For example
Electronic Arts's Deluxe Music Construction set comes with Wb 1.2. You
should be able to find the Printer.device on that disk if you have it. It
should be in the DEVS: directory of any 1.2 floppy.
I used to use a LA50. I sold it for $150.00 and bought a Star Micronics for
$157.00. This was two years ago or so. Printers have dropped in price
drastically since then.
