I have reservations about this. What about the Amiga Dealers that
are currently in the marketplace. Apple did not get it's share of the market
through mass marketing. Then there is the question of support. How much
support will the mass marketing stores offer the user. I feel CBM is selling
the dealers out. They are not allowing the Amiga dealers to sell CDTV,but turn
around and say it's ok for the mass market to sell CDTV,and amigas. I had
hoped the c64 marketing mentality had gone away, but it seems to be the platform
CBM has chose to use. I know! some will say the 64 did well but the market was
different. Their explanation on the decision for the CDTV was it is not a
computer,so the current dealers should not sell it.(actually they cut the
dealers to make it more palatable for the chain stores). After all once you
add the optional keyboard, and mouse the d*** thing looks like an Amiga to me.
Of course CBM will allow you to buy a CD for the AMY from your Amiga Dealer.
AT 3/4 the cost of a complete CDTV! WOW arn't we blessed.

| Oh! I forgot as for the mass market, what kind of software do you think
will take a front seat? I don't see the High end stuff as the prime
choice. Sure a lot of people will say the more Amigas the more support.
I agree, but the High end commercial developers will look to a solid
professional base(I**,App**) as opposed to the 500 for their products.

3951.4 | At least one dealer isn't upset. | 11SRUS::MARK | Waltzing with Bears | Thu Jul 26 1990 16:22 | 10 |
| I was talking with one of the Steve's up at System Eyes a few weeks ago
about this issue. He didn't seem at all upset about the A500 going mass market.
He claims that while the old A500 is now mass market, the 'real' dealers are
selling something called the A500P, which has 1 meg of chip memory, an intro
software package, and, I think, one other thing. This sells for about the same
price as the old A500s. Further, he figures that even if someone buys an A500
in the mass market, they're going to have to come to him for real software,
anyway.

| re:.4
looks like he's got the right attitude. CBM is trying to keep the
dealers happy and at the same time, trying to repeat the success they
had the the C64. I wouldn't expect the 500P to be a dealer only item
for long though. If CBM gets the impression that the mass market is
willing to pay the price for it...
Meanwhile, I'd expect the dealer base to concentrate on selling 2000s
and 3000s and lots of 3rd party software and hardware (the middle and
high end of the amiga market).
After seeing the size of the ibmpc clone installed base, I'd say CBM
really needs to sell a lot of amigas before those companies that
have the nice, high end packages start saying "what's the installed
base of amigas, rounded to the nearest 10 million".

3951.6 | Increase user base | CSC32::A_ANDERSON | DTN 592-4170 NSU/VAX | Thu Jul 26 1990 19:26 | 8 |
| Also keep in mind that if enough users buy the A500 for games some of
those users will want to do other things and need to move to a larger
system. Thus the original dealers will get their share of the
increased market. Also if enough 500's are sold CA might get enough
revenue to do bigger and better things down the road.

3951.7 | What about that P? | STAR::ROBINSON | | Fri Jul 27 1990 13:14 | 13 |
| Does anyone know exactly what the A500P is? Does this have one meg chip
by default, _plus_ the trap door for adding more ram (etc), or is it just a
designation for A500 sold with A501 (1/2 meg) installed and fat agnus?
If it has 1 meg and room for more, this is significant for anyone who wants to
buy the 500P (with free Amigavision) and expand to more megs. Otherwise they
are throwing away an A501 when they put in a 3rd party memory board.
AS I understand it an Amiga without 1 meg doesn't come with free Amigavision.
People who want the PC board, the shown-in-europe Atari emulator or mini hard
drive might also care about this.

The A500-P is a standard A500 with a A501 board and a fat agnus.

Are you sure it does not use the places on the motherboard for the extra
ram that is available on A500 motherboards sold this year? I think it does,
but will check to be sure.
