Subj: Stalking the Wily Hacker - Digital Cambridge Research Lab Seminar - July 12
Digital Equipment Corporation
Cambridge Research Lab Seminar
Thursday, July 12, 1990 3:00 - 4:00
"Stalking the Wily Hacker"
Dr. Cliff Stoll
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
Dr. Stoll will cover common methods of attack, detection, and
localization of computer system intruders, gleaned from first hand
experience tracking down the "Hanover hacker".
Additionally, Cliff will cover other topics including the adiabatic
lapse rate of the Jovian atmosphere, cookie recipies, and problems
involving unit conversions.
Cliff's book, The Cuckoo's Egg, is on sale at most good bookstores,
and at all not-so-good bookstores. This book tells the true story
of tracking a spy through the maze of computer espionage.

lumps of bituminous coal into diamonds.

3925.1 | Tell 'em hi... | CSCOAC::KENDRIX_J | | Thu Jul 12 1990 09:37 | 21 |

Wish I could come, I'd like to meet both you and Cliff... Strange that
this shoudl be happening right now, since I'm reading his book at
present.
The amazing thing to me is the method that the Hanover Hacker used. I
thought that he'd be some computer Guru that could break an algorythym
(SP!?) at a single bound... Actually the hacker could only get in
because of dumb system managers who left their doors wide open with
default passwords like 'system, manager', 'user, user' and
'field,service'... I found it also shocking that Clif said that this
guy was a smart programmer. I thought that the guy must really be
churning out some code ... not so... he wrote a couple of script
files, and knew about a whole... Common sense things at best...
Oh Well... hey, Tell Cliff I said Hi, and ask him if he has his yo-yo
with him... Anyone who will yo-yo on 20/20 can't be a bad guy....
(Although in the book he does sound like a bit of a Democrat....)

3925.2 | bummer! | WJG::GUINEAU | | Fri Jul 13 1990 09:02 | 16 |
| Well, we drove to CRL, got there at just befroe 3:00 and they were
turning everyone away. No more room!
They [CRL] had turned about 50 people away *before* it even started.
So we opted for a tour of crl, graciously given by an employee. Nice place.
Not your standard DEC facility by any stretch of the imagination. There
were some "big guys" offices around (like Jim Gettys, Win Treese etc)
but were vacant (*they* got to the seminar early!).
Cliff is moving back to LBL (Lawerence Berkley Labs) in CA since they've
funded him again :-(
We tried to convince crl to fly him back out for another talk...
