3891.0. "RD53 on Amiga?" by FILTON::FENTON_R (Potassium Ethoxide Rules C2H5OOK) Mon Jul 02 1990 07:56

Panic mode! Alan Thomson having gone on THREE WEEKS' holiday, I
need urgent help and must throw myself on your collective mercies...
re. Note 3845, I've managed to get hold of an old RD53. No-one knows
whether it works or not, as they can't remember where it came from...
what I need to know now is, am I up to the job?

I can build a simple metal cabinet to mount it in; I once put together
    a +5V and +12V regulated PSU for a 3" floppy - would that suffice
    for the RD?

Is my understanding correct - I need to purchase (1) a SCSI port
for the A500, (2) a SCSI - ST506 adaptor? Will the latter connect
up to the plug on the RD53 etc.? Any ideas where I could buy these
two modules (in the UK preferably)?

There would appear to be two ribbon cables sticking out of the RD53
    - one with twenty pins (well holes actually), one with 34... help...

    -Rog the panic-stricken

PS I assume if it DOESN'T work, it's for the crusher (ie I don't
think you can fix platters/heads etc when they go?)

There are three methods (that I know of) to allow you to use an ST-506
  disk on the amiga 500.

  1. HDA-506 interface - This is the solution I have adopted and it's worked
flawlessly with 2x RD53's for over a year now . It basically consists
of an IBM disk controller card (OPTI-5520) plugged into an adapter that
plugs into the 86 pin expansion connector on the side of the A500.

  2. The second method I've seen mentioned in these notes but have no
experience of is to plug a SCSI host adapter into the expansion port
and plug an ST-506 to SCSI interface card into this .This second method
has the advantage of allowing you to add SCSI disks at a future date.

  3. The third option is to use the homebrew interface which is described
in this notesfile . do dir/tit="cheaphd" or "cheap hd".
This is actually very simular to option 1 above in that it uses an
IBM controller plugged into an adapter card (which is in this case
     homemade).

for more info on the first option see note 2692.* if you need any more
help with the HDA-506 let me know .(reply here or if you need help
in a hurry send me mail).

One thing I would recommend you do however is check the disk out on
a digital system of some kind before buying anything as it may have
taken a knock , the disk assembly is vacume sealed so if the disk
does prove to be bad you won't be able to fix it yourself .

..... and all will be revealed.

I havent done a search on "SCSI" yet, but I suspect there will be
a plethora of notes on that too.

I need a little information about my 2000 and how to set up the RD53
    drive. I have a A2091 / 50meg 3.5" drive. I also just got a A2090
controller and a RD52 running. I would like to add the RD53 drive as
the #2 drive off the A2090 controller. What jumper do I need to move
    around?

    Any jumpers on the controller?
What jumpers on the drive? and where?

Does anyone know what the mountlist should look like for the RD53?

    Thanks Bob
