DECnet Phase IV software for Commodore's Amiga enables PC to act
as peer node in DECnet network
by Eric Smalley
"MILFORD, Mass. - Startup company Interworks has unveiled a DECnet
Phase IV implementation for the Commodore Amiga, allowing the PC
to participate as a peer node in a DECnet network.
Interworks' EnLAN Network System was developed by company founder
Nick Frabotta.
The EnLAN system, which is available for both asynchronous serial
and Ethernet connections, provides file transfer, task-to-task
communications and terminal emulation software.
EnLAN includes the File Copy, File Directory and File Delete utilities
for manipulating files on a remote DECnet system.
In addition, the software includes the File Access Listener program,
which allows users on remote DECnet nodes to manipulate files on
the Amiga.
Task-to-task communications allow programs running on the Amiga
to interact with programs running on a remote DECnet node.
The Network Virtual Terminal feature allows multiple simultaneous
terminal sessions on one or more remote VMS systems. The software
works with a variety of terminal emulation packages and comes with
VT100 emulation software.
"With X windows out [for the Amiga PC], the Amiga makes a nice,
cheap workstation," Frabotta said.
The asynchronous version of EnLAN supports full-duplex modem control
over RS-232-C serial lines, according to Frabotta.
Interworks will also offer an Ethernet adapter card for the Amiga.
The adapter card supports 10Base 2 thin-wire Ethernet, although
the EnLAN software supports both thin-wire and regular Ethernet
cable. The board has dual-port memory.
The EnLAN Network System will be available in August, priced at
$295.
Interworks is located at 195 E. Main St., Milford, MA 01757,
(508) 476-3893."
