3874.0. "Comms Probs/TX Probs/Lotsa Probs" by CURRNT::POWELL (I admit it - I LIKE Vogon poetry!!) Sat Jun 23 1990 18:01

    Amiga Format magazine here in the UK supplied a VT100 emulator called
    (wait for it) VT100 - this being version 2.7.

    So having the software, I recently got the hardware and here I am.
    Sounds like a bedtime story with the mandatory happy ending, doesn't
    it? Well, no, frankly it isn't.

    Unfortunately, on my A500, the VT100 emulator plays silly buggers
    on the keyboard mapping and I was hoping to find software that actually
    used those grey keys (,),/ and * instead of having to rush half-way
    across the keyboard for my PF4, etc.

    So then the thought stuck me - go look in the AMIGA conference.
    There I was until the wee small hours scanning the directory and
    there were enough references to have me scurrying to WJG:: for solace.

    Indeed, the wealth of software was astounding and I have a list
    this long of games and utilities I'd like. However, I reminded myself,
    I'm only here for the comms stuff at the mo.

    I already have copies of ARC and ZOO on the Amiga (no idea of versions)
    so I thought I'd carry on and get myself some decent comms software.

    So I now have copies of the following list. Some of them I have
    already copied to my Amiga using Kermit. It was *so* slow I tried
    XMODEM, but I think the results below speak for themselves.

    	File VAX Usage (ZOO/ARC.EXE)	Amiga Access (ZOO/ARC)
	--------------- ----------------------- ---------------------------
    	ARC.EXE		Seems OK?		---
    	ARC23.ARC	Reads OK. My ARC can't read the file
						at all.
    	AZCOMM.ARC	Bad header. Haven't copied yet.
    	HANDSHAKE212.ZOO Directory entry is	Too large to copy with
    			invalid. all the errors so far.
    	JRCOMM93.ARC	Reads OK.		---
    	VT100_29.ZOO	Reads OK. Can't read at all.
    	VT200.ARC	Bad headers throughout.	Bad headers throughout.
    	XMODEM.EXE	Seems to timeout OK but	VT100 times out after an
    			I can't get any data	initial successful read
    			accross so who knows	but after timeout locks
    			if it works? the keyboard and have
						reload program.
    	ZOO200.ARC	Reads OK. Lots of bad headers.

    I'm going crazy here. All I wanted was a more recent VT package to
    make working from home more enjoyable. If someone can get me out
    of this rut I would be most eternally grateful.

    Oh yeahhhh,
    seems that you have the usual "new-user-file-format-differences-
    between-amiga-dos-and-vms-problem".
    Amiga-DOS ZOO and ARC seems to be OK. Good.
    VMS too. You install them as foreign commands. Right?
    You need an additional program named CVTARC.EXE (for VMS-side).
    Install it as a foreign command ( $ CVTARC :== $cvtarc.exe)
    and call it with the following parameters:

     $ CVTARC V filename for converting files to VAR length 510 bytes to
       make sure they can be transferred with the KERMIT-protocol.

     $ CVTARC U filename for converting files to CR, STREAM-LF to
       make sure they can be transferred with the X/Y/Z-modem-protocol,
       AND for manipulations at RMS-Level.

    If you want to extract DOC-file on your VAX the ARC-archive or the
    ZOO-archive have to be in CR, STREAM-LF-format !!!

    If you want to copy an archive, let's say with VT100's Kermit-Im-
    plementation, it has to be in VAR lenght 510 bytes

    In each other case you receive error-messages when you try to manipulate
    an archive either on ADOS or VMS and it has NOT the CORRECT
    file-format.

    CVTARC.EXE is on the usual places on WJG:: and so on ...

    Good luck,

    Ralf
    ====

    PS, check this conference for my small command-files, they
    are helpful in using CVTARC. If you are not able to find them
    send me vaxmail, but gimme one week to answer, i'm on training.

3874.3So far so good - but Xmodem's still a ... problemCURRNT::POWELLI admit it - I LIKE Vogon poetry!!Fri Jun 29 1990 08:1521
    Re: .1

    Thanks for that. This explained quite a lot and as proof of the
    pudding, I'm now (sort of) happily using V2.9 of VT100. However,
    I'm still somewhat stuck - see below.

    Re: .2

    Thanks for the offer. I've been struggling to get to grips with
    the files I have but so far no luck - still bad headers in the VAX
    copy so obviously no joy on the Amiga. I'll send a disk via internal
    if or rather when I've finally given up!

    However, I'm still having problems with XMODEM.EXE. Has anyone any
    ideas about this? Trying two different Amiga-based xmodem protocols
    - from VT100 and Access! - still gives the same result where there
    doesn't seem to be anything sent from the VAX. I'm getting fairly
    desperate, since 8 minutes with xmodem is certainly preferable
    to 45 or so with Kermit!

    David.
3874.4VT100 - better, but...CURRNT::POWELLI admit it - I LIKE Vogon poetry!!Fri Jun 29 1990 08:2515
    By the way, is anyone out there using VT100 2.9? It seems by far
    and away a better version than V2.7 except in three small areas:

    	1. At last I've got my PF1-PF4 in the right place but still
    	   no joy with the minus and comma keys ( - and + on Amiga)

    	2. Cursor positioning when using the application cursor keys
	   is not completely accurate - particularly painful as I'm
	   spending a majority of my time in an editor of some sort.

    	3. Not that I fully understand what its all about yet, but if
	   nothing else, is there any way of getting rid of the "Can't
	   open rexxsyslib.library" message?

    David.
3874.5VT200 - Brill! (All's well that ends!!)CURRNT::POWELLI admit it - I LIKE Vogon poetry!!Sat Jun 30 1990 22:1516
    Ah well. It looks like both my copies of VT100 are soon to bite
    the dust - spotting a later note after my last reply was a pointer
    to VT200 on CRISTA::. So now until I work out the right code for
    the colour I want, I have a wonderful yellow screen *AND* a full
    working keypad. Happy? I'm extatic!

    However (sorry) I have just one small questionette: If VT100 was
    shareware, why isn't VT200? I've only used it a short while but
    anyone who's used VT100 would, like me, love it.

    Thanks again for the help.

    David.

    (P.S. Wonder how long I'll have to wait for a DECWindows/Amiga
    emulator!!!)
3874.6Internal use onlyAMIGA2::MCGHIEThank Heaven for small Murphys !Sun Jul 01 1990 19:1911
The Vt200 emulator (Smokey) is for internal use only. I believe it was derived
from Dave Wecker's VT100 emulator, but the guy who extended it made use
of Digital 'technology'. I believe he was working in the terminal engineering group at the time.

So no distribution outside of Digital.

3874.7Amy and DEcstation not on speaking termsMINNIE::EASTFri Nov 01 1991 13:0024
    Right Guy's and Gal's,
    	In a conference of this size it is difficult to know if this subject
    has been discussed before. But in the interests of some sort of logical
    grouping I am going to hijack this note to discuss connecting Amy to an
    Ultrix system.

    	How do I get Amy and My Decstation 3100 to converse via the
    Decstation printer port? Amy is suitably connected and will talk to the
    3100 as an alternative console using <Enable TTY(3)> commands but I
    cant get them to communicate via Ultrix.

    	I have modified ttys to turn on the getty and rebooted the system
    but to no avail. I have tried several entries in ttys none of which
    work. How do I find out which entry in ttys is the correct one? Are
    there any other modifications I need to make?

    	As you have probably guessed I am a novice U**x user so any answers
    you give will need to be in commands of one syllable.

    Any help you experts can give will be much appreciated.

    	Regards,
    		David

3874.8WHAMMY::spodarykFor three strange days...Fri Nov 01 1991 13:1312
What type of functionality are you trying to achieve? An Ultrix prompt
on the Amiga side, an Amiga prompt on the Ultrix side, or some type
of resource sharing (files, etc).

It sounds like you have the "Amiga as Ultrix console" set up, but that
you want some type of peer-to-peer connectivity. For that you'll
need TCP, DECnet, or maybe even look at the Amiga PD parallel port network
stuff on the Fish Disks (PARNET?)

please elaborate...

3874.9Terminal EmulationMINNIE::EASTFri Nov 01 1991 13:3714
    Steve,
    	Sorry, "familiarity breeds contempt". I am getting Amy and the
    Decstation to talk so that I can do Uploads and Downloads. Amy is
    running "Handshake". DEcstation has the ability to run Kermit and
    Xmodem. I need to establish terminal emulation communication between the
    two.

    	I can get stuff of the net using the Decstation. It's just a
    question of being able to trasnsfer it to Amy.

    Regards,
    	David

David,

     I must admit that I'm not an ULTRIX guru. Would the easiest thing
be to just connect the Amiga serially to a local terminal server, and then
login to the ULTRIX node, using Handshake? Then you could just download
"normally" at 9.6/19.2 speeds. It works great for VMS systems.

     It might be easier than going direct "port to port", although that
sounds like it might be possible. I had my Amiga hooked to a VMS VAXstation
serially, and could then (using Kermit) get an Amiga prompt within
a workstation window (using Steve Drew's serial device). This would also
allow upload/downloading, but a little differently than you're trying.

     I never played around much with the ULTRIX <--> Amiga side of things
because I got an ethernet board about the same time as the DECstation.

I'd give the LAT a try. That is an extra box that can screw things up
(and has, in some cases), but it's simple and straightforward.

I've connected terminals to the printer port on DSs before. Making sure
you've got the physical connection right is harder than the Ultrix
side. For ultrix, just change the right tty line (either tty00 or tty01)
in /etc/ttys from off to on; you should be able to log in. You might
want to change it from std.9600 to 8bit.9600.

3874.12Regaining ConnectivityHAMPS::EASTPerfick.....Mon Nov 04 1991 03:3115
    Steve & Mike
    	Thanks for the help. Amy and the Decstation sit about 4 feet apart
    in my office at home. Decatation is connected via modem to the office.
    I successfully connected Amy with my Vaxstation 2000 before it was
    replaced by the DS 3100. I was really trying to regain the connectivity
    I had before. I could connect Amy to the modem if all else fails.

    	I tried modifying tty00 and tty01 in /etc/ttys but did not check
    whether it was std of eightbit. I'll give it a go.

    		Thanks again
    			Regards,
    				David.

Also if you alter ttys do a kill -1 1 to make the changes work.
3874.14could it be "spooled"HAMPS::EASTPerfick.....Mon Nov 04 1991 07:5310
    Greg,
    	I tried kill -1 1 after each of the alterations I made but
    it made no visible difference. Either I have not the right
    entry in ttys or I have another problem.
    How do I find out whether the printer port is "spooled" or assigned to
    a print que that is overriding the getty?

    		Regards,
    			David.

3874.15Amy loves DECstationHAMPS::EASTPerfick.....Mon Nov 04 1991 10:2013
    Steve,Mike Greg,
    	Many thanks for your help. I discovered printcap had an entry
    assigning tty01 to an la75. Which was of course "spooled". Using lpc
    to remove this entry (the LA75 being no longer connected) and turning
    on the getty for tty01 sparked Amy into life "UltrixWise". Making Amy
    in to 7 bit mode produced intelligable communication.

    	Tweaking 7/8bit mode, Kermit and Xmodem should produce the right
    results now.

    		Regards,
    			David.

David,

Well many things could be happenning!

do a #file /dev/tty*

and see what it says!

Some of these will be LAT terminals, you can't use those!

check out the file /etc/printcap. The line lp= will tell you what ttys
are set up for the printer.

I seem to remember when I did a terminal in the back of a decstation
3100, I just turned on tty00 and tty01.

Hope this helps!
