3852.0. " new "1500" expansion box questions." by SHARE::DOYLE () Mon Jun 18 1990 10:34

On usenet, I've heard about an expansion box for the 500 called the
    "1500".
This product allows the use of any A2000 card in a # of slots it
    provides (except the bridge-board).
It also allows for a detachable keyboard...
So far, it's only offered in the U.K.
Does anyone have more specifics, does anyone in the U.K. have one?
Or is this another "Magic-never-to-appear" Expansion box bust.
     Some specifics I'm looking for...

The case dimensions of the box.
Does it come with a keyboard case for the detachable keyboard?
How many slots does it provide...
Does it come with a replacement power supply ?
How many drive bays and where are they located.
Do you place the internals of the A500 inside or does the
A500 sit up top of the box.
What about a fan, are there any?

    						Thanx

    Ed,
you might want to check out note 3833 too.. (reply .4 or .5 ->.14)

The case dimensions of the box.
The box is 19" rack mountable (with an optional faceplate) and is
    U2 high (rackmount terminology - about 4")

Does it come with a keyboard case for the detachable keyboard?
    	Yes, and the curly cable.

How many slots does it provide...

The base A1500 has no A2000 slots, they are provided (2 at a time)
by "stackable" expansion boxes. The base unit can have a CPU slot
and/or a Video slot wired in.

Does it come with a replacement power supply ?

    	No.

How many drive bays and where are they located.

There are two 3 drive bays, both at the front RHS la 3000.

Do you place the internals of the A500 inside or does the
A500 sit up top of the box.

The A500 motherboard fits inside the A1500 case, there is also room
for the A590 board, with the A590 drive in one of the 3 bays.

What about a fan, are there any?

    	None.

Other points, the A500 RF shielding is thrown away, as the A1500 is a
VERY strong steel case. The mouse and Joystick ports are repositioned
    at the front la 2000.

It is a real product, they are selling all they can make.

It has a space for a 3" fan and you can get an upgraded P.S.U.!!!

But I've yet to find out if the slots are BUFFERED and or
    Terminated..

I believe this is very important for the likes of Microbotics
    HardFrame...

The Cost in England is 200 + VAT(15% tax) for the base system..
Another 200 +VAT for each expansion box...

A friend and I were both interested, but when he told me that 200
pounds = roughly $520, I was abit put off.
Some one tell me this isn't the proper exchange rate
    1pound=$2.60dollars.

Some how paying $520 bucks for the base unit and $520 for each
expansion unit doesn't sound like the way to go.

    This should be 1 = $1.70 so 200 = $340. No quite so bad, eh ?

I left E-Mail with the Sysop of the ABLE BBS about A1500 expansion unit.
He replied saying that they had an order in for these units for about a month,
but they haven't recieved anything yet.
He assumes they aren't shipping yet.
He also said he'd E-mail me a price as soon as it was available, and would
update his price list to include the unit.
I'll be interested to see what the price will be.
