3739.0. "Supra Internal Modem - HELP!" by CGHUB::MILLER_C (Chuck - Don't Worry, be HOPpy!) Wed May 02 1990 13:55

Hello folks, I need your help!

I have an Amiga 2000. I recently installed a SUPRA 2400zi Modem.
This is an internal modem which leaves the serial port free for
other things. This is a great concept, if your software supports it.
You have to run a program which edits any references to the serial
port and redirects them to the modem slot which your 2400zi occupies.

I have succeeded in doing so with Access!. I ran the "Modem Modify"
program and it works great. I recently purchased A-Talk III from Oxxi
software. According to the documentation supplied by Supra, this program
should work without any modification at all. To date, I have had no
success at all. I am planning on calling Supra today.

In the meantime, I though I might poll the local Amiga base to see if
any of you folks are running this internal modem, and if so, what luck
you may have had using it.

Please advise,
Chuck

Have you changed the serial device name in ATALK III setup screens? It
is probably located in the communications menu or wherever the baud rate
parity and character size is set.

I checked the setup screens. There is no menu selection which
addresses this problem. But I did follow your lead, and I may have
found the problem. In the back of the Atalk manual, in the appendix
    it says:
" A new serial device can be selected by setting the DEVICE
and UNIT in the icon ToolType. Use the Info Workbench command to
set one or both of DEVICE and UNIT.

    The syntax is as follows:
    a) Different Serial DEVICE
    		DEVICE=name
    		Example:
    		DEVICE=sevenserial.device"

If I were to substitute DEVICE=modem0.device, it may do the trick.
     I'll let you know.

One of my biggest problems with this machine is that I am not a
bit head. My exposure to PC's has been primarily with Lotus 1-2-3,
so I have only had to know a few MS-DOS housekeeping commands.

I am not yet up to speed on the AmigaDOS operating system and Workbench
or the hardware architecture. As a result, I am constantly running
into walls. Anybody know of any good tutorials on disk or video
tape which would help a struggling illiterate?

    Regards,
    Chuck

There are a few good reference manuals for the Amiga by Compute! and
Abacus publications. Most bookstores only carry the ROM Kernal and
Intuition manuals, so you may have to try mail order to find them.

The best way to get info on Amiga textbooks is to splurge $3.00 on a
copy of AmigaWorld. Each issue will list dozens of sources of Amiga
reference manuals from well-established mail order companies.

Heys Folks Hey Folks, I figured it out, thanks to your assistance.
I had to change the Tool Type with DEVICE=Modem0.device, as I had
    mentioned in a previous note.

I am currently logged into my Amiga using the Supra 2400zi and A-Talk
III. I have set the terminal as VT100 but now the keyboard in NOTES
does not work like my terminal at the office. The Keypad commands
to advance to the next unread notes don't work etc. I also can't
    delete anything HELP!

    Thanks

At your VMS prompt, type SET TERM/DEV=VT100.

Also, Atalk does not translate the BS/DEL key. You can remap it.
There is a discussion on this in the AMIGA_SYS usenet notes.
