3703.0. "Clay coated paper?" by DUGGAN::GAY (Now where'd I put that hammer...) Fri Apr 20 1990 16:49

Anyone else using a Quadram Quadjet inkjet printer?

When I got it (2nd hand) the previous owner reccommended getting
clay coated paper (which spreads the dot and significantly improves
the color). I used to buy this at The Memory Connection, but they
stopped carrying it. They suggested calling Cannon and asking for
paper for a PJ1088. They did not have a number for Cannon.

So far, I have not found any place that has either clay coated
paper or a number for Cannon.

I'm using regular paper (such as the LJ250 takes) now and it's just
    not as pretty.

I'm about to do a massive phonathon working my way through the
Yellow Pages, but figgered I'd ask here first (besides I'm a
bit busy just now, not a lot of time for hanging about on the
    phone).

    Thanks
    Eben Gay

The paper DEC sells for the LJ250 printers is coated, and rather
overpriced. This type of paper is available from many of the
'business' computer supply houses - you know, the little catalogs
featuring assorted bulk disks, printer ribbons, etc. They may list
it as paper for HP DeskJet/PaintJet printers. The last box I bought
was around $50 for 2500 sheets.

The HP Deskjet does NOT use coated paper.

Thanks, I'll check out some of the mailorder supply places then.

I got kinda discouraged by the local computer supply places
(mention "clay coated" and they look at you very strangely
    "you want WHAT?").

    The LYBEN catalog lists:

        "Ink Jet Bond" computer paper
        (#0773) $10.95 for 600 sheets
        (#0772) $34.50 for 2500 sheets

    Thanks,

I got a test pack of something similar from Inmac. It is coated,
but the coating is much thinner than the paper I had before and
doesn't smear the ink as well. I suspect that the Quadram Quadjet
may not put out as much ink as current printers (maybe that's why
I'd never heard of the company at the time I bought it). The color
saturation on "ink jet" paper is better than on regular printer paper
but not as good as on clay coated paper.

I'll just have to keep looking. In the mean time, as a result of all
this testing, I have enough oddments of stray different papers
that it'll be a while before I run completely out.

(of course, the best solution is to chuck this printer and go get
one of those photo quality printers that were being demoed at
SIGGRAPH. Think my wife would go for a 2nd mortgage?)
