3697.0. "A500 Ram Expansion" by GIDDAY::MORAN (I'm not bad-I'm just drawn that way!) Thu Apr 19 1990 21:00

    I have a friend who has a REV6 A500 motherboard. It had 4 empty RAM
    sockets. I bought the correct RAM chips and installed them.

    Unfortunately the amiga could not see this memory- So I changed JP2
    (which according to the Amiga manual changes the location of the
    external memory from $c00000 to $08000). This results in me finding out
    that I now have 1M of chip RAM but when I plug in the A501 expansion
    and power on the system I just get a constant guru ( no guru number -
    just the power light flashing continously).

    Has anyone else tried this with success ???

    Thanks in advance for your help - Shaun.

3697.1recent A500 only ?YIPPEE::GOULNIKYves GOULNIK - EAITC/Mfg ValbonneFri Apr 20 1990 03:556

	Just as a matter of interest, how does one find his/her
	Amiga 500 motherboard is a REV6 ? Does that mean later
	A500 had more room for additional RAM ?

3697.2Weird memory expansion problemLETOUR::HENNESSYIMAGES....diddled here....Fri Apr 20 1990 10:2424

    	I have a weird expansion memory problem with my A500.

    	I just bought a 501 clone to expand my A500.
    	When I plug it in, my system does not boot, no workbench picture on
    	 the screen, nothing.
    	Take out the 501 clone. The system boots.
    	I took the A500 and the clone back to the store. We tried several
    	 clones, even one from the A500 in the demo area. Same thing.
    	So I left it for them to fix.

    	They told me yesterday that there is a difference in the current
    	 sinking ability between the older(my A500 is 20 months old) and
    	 the new A500s. It appears that I have to buy a real 501(and pay
    	 over 100% more!) because the real 501 board does not have the
    	 additional pull down/ups that the clones have?!?!?!?!?!

    	Anyone know anything about this problem? A solution?

    	Thanks,
    		Rich.

    Unfortunately you have to open the beast up to find out if it's a Rev6
    motherboard. If you look at the right hand side of the Amy it should
    say the Rev number there.

    The other way is to see if you have 16 chips for ram (rev 5) or 4 chips
    with 4 blank spaces for more there (rev 6).
