3683.3 | VLT kermit buggy? Use x modem or zmodem | STAR::ROBINSON | | Tue Apr 17 1990 16:04 | 11 |
| I have a recollection from somewhere (usenet?) that the
VLT kermit upload does not work, or is at least buggy. Someone here may
remember, but I suggest you look at the other VLT notes in this conference
and in AMIGA_SYS_1 and AMIGA_SYS. Probably the best approach is to
figure out how to use something other than kermit for your transfers.
XMODEM and ZMODEM are considerably faster.
Documentation is in the VLT ZOO files. You may need to go back a version
or so to get the whole thing. Check out WGJ::AMIGA:VLT*

| VLT with Kermit has worked great for me so far.
For Xmodem with VLTjr what program do I need on the amiga side and what
is it called in the library?

| Also there is an XPR version of Kermit that might work better. Should
be on tape somewhere or in the amiga_binaries notes file.

3683.6 | get arp.library | PEBBLE::mwm | Mike (Real Amigas have Keyboard Garages) Meyer | Tue Apr 17 1990 18:56 | 13 |
| It sounds like you don't have arp.library installed. It's pretty much required
for VLT (either flavor) to do anything. Since VLT uses the arp file requester,
that could cause the behavior you're seeing. Check on that.
Note that the XPR/Kermit library is pretty buggy, and I generally get better
results (i.e. - they system doesn't die on me as it sometimes does with
XPR/Kermit).
Likewise, I find that XPR/zmodem sometimes goes into loops when uploading
a large binary file. Downloading works just fine, and small files work
just fine. Have as yet to try a large ascii file.

3683.7 | Frame size/buffers change needed for ZModem | FROCKY::BALZER | Christian Balzer DTN:785-1029 | Wed Apr 18 1990 04:33 | 16 |
| Re: .6
I'll second Mike's remarks about the arp.library and the buggy
XPR-Kermit.
As far as uploading large (larger >32KB) files using XPR-Zmodem
(V2.0) is concerned, I had the same problem. I was ready to toss
the whole thing back into the unholly zoo archive where it came
from, ;-) until I started to experiment with some of the buffer
settings in the Zmodem setup. I don't have the exact values handy
right now (I use Handshake most of the time, since I _need_ that
VT220 functionality, btw. anybody seen V2.20 of it yet?), but if
you don't find them out yourself, I'll be glad to fire up VLT and
take a look.

| At least I don't feel quite so dumb now. Setting "Host as
Server" didn't work. My current conjecture is that I need
RexxArpLib.library to get the file requester. I'm going to
try that this evening.

If you want VT100/VT200 and Zmodem why not use JRComm V.99?
If no one has it I'll Upload it as soon as I get the latest...

| Re: .9
Thanks for offer, Steve, but you better don't.
JRComm versions higher 0.94 are copyrighted beta releases, for
dedicated, registered JRComm users. They're not shareware or public
domain.
And since this is Germany, home of at least a third of all Amigas
and 80% of all the crackers and pirates, I already was able to take
a look at the 0.99 version and it doesn't compare to Handshake in
the VT220 emulation...

3683.12 | get arp.library not RexxArpLib.library | PEBBLE::mwm | Mike (Real Amigas have Keyboard Garages) Meyer | Wed Apr 18 1990 15:52 | 13 |
| re .8 - RexxArpLib.library shouldn't be needed to use VLT. It's a Rexx support
library that allows Rexx programs to access Intuition functions (started with
arp functions, but grew). You should be able to do upload/downloads via the
transfer menu without having any Rexx functionality at all.
Now, if you're trying to use the Rexx scripts (sendtovax, etc) that come
with VLT, they need RexxArpLib.library.
re .7 - I spent some time playing with the buffer setttings, but never
got anything to work very well at all. I'd be interested in what xpr/zmodem
settings you're using to get reliable uploads.

3683.14 | Frame size <> 0 | FROCKY::BALZER | Christian Balzer DTN:785-1029 | Thu Apr 19 1990 05:39 | 11 |
| Re: .12
I use a frame size of 512 bytes with my setup, since the 19200 bps
line to the server is a bit noisy every now and then. Your milage
may very, but I found it absolutly necessary to the set the frame
size to something different than 0 (max. 1024). Buffer size can
be anything you feel comfortable (I use 32KB).
Hope that helps,

3683.15 | Just to let everyone know | DEMOAX::MCKENDRY | Nasty, Brutish, and Short | Fri May 04 1990 11:08 | 11 |
| Update: I finally discovered the file requester by looking behind
the front screen (CTRL-left_Amiga-N). Auto-screen-to-front doesn't
work with Kermit; I think I read this somewhere in the documentation.
Having gotten Kermit to work I've switched to XModem anyway, because
Kermit somehow trashes the format of .zoo archives. It took a little
while to find the right combination of switches, but it's working now.
Thanks to everyone for the help.
