3676.0. "Home Builders CAD Discussion" by CAM::ARENDT (Harry Arendt CAM::) Mon Apr 16 1990 14:31

    Hi Y'all

    I would like to reserve this note for discussions about HOME
    BUILDERS CAD from EASEWARE. I just ordered two of the three
    packages;

    Home Builders Cad - Supposedly a CAD system which is oriented to
    	                designing houses and then generating a bill
                        of materials with price estimates.

    Home Builders Choice - A library of pre-done homes and accessories.

    After I get this package( Friday 4/20 according to ABLE) I will
    write a review and post it here.

	What is the status of this? I have been considering getting
HBC for myself as we are looking at building our next home. I would
like to get some opinions on this before I spend the money. I appreciate
the info I get in this notes file. It is nice to get "software reviews"
by people that are not paid (read free software) for their "opinion".

thanks,

Daryl

    I have made little progress with the package. I am over a year
    from the point at which I need to get serious about a house so
    I am in no hurry. However I do have some initial comments about
    the program.

    1. This seems to be a classic job of seperating a package into
       parts in order to sell each at a resonable price. The package
       comes in;

       a. Home Builders CAD - Drawing and estimation package which allows
          you to print out the estimate and bill of materials.

       b. Home Builders Choice - This module allows you to modify the
          standard building blocks of Home Builders Choice. It also
          allows you to create your own building blocks.

       c. Home Builders Library - Predefined library of building blocks.

       d. Home Builders Print - Allows you to print out your drawings.

    I have worked some of the demos and the package is very easy to
    use and very feature laden.

    Problems;

    1. The software requires 500k bytes of memory for the CAD and
       400k bytes for the estimator. If you come up short then it
       just dies! No guru, no warning! I have it installed on
       a hard disk and I haven't been able to free up this much
       memory.

    2. The author is a one man operation who does not even have a
       buisness phone! His answering machine does not even give
       his name ( I suggested this might be wise. ) On the other
       hand he did call me back and was very helpfull on the
       phone.

    I am currently saving up to buy a memory card with 2 meg in it and
    will have more on the package after I get this installed.
