hi, i just got a-talk-III for the amiga and like it a lot - it's pretty complete, the user interface is pretty sensible, etc. one question: how can i use it to dial in to one of those digital FX numbers - they're available only outside business hours, and when you reach them, you get another dial tone, at which point you're supposed to dial a dtn to reach a lat. do i need to set up an at3 script file? how does it recognize a dial tone? etc. etc. any help appreciated! thanks very much, ken quirici

Ken, To get ATalkIII to handle FX numbers is pretty easy, no script file needed, though I can send you the one I use if you'd like. I'm using a Scholar and simply do a: CTRL/B Pxxxnnnn=Tyyymmmm! The P is used since I don't have touch tone service, the xxxnnnn is the FX number I call (substitute whatever is local to your area). The '=' is the trick to get the modem to wait for the secondary dial tone; the number after it is the DTN of your lat (the T switches over to touch-tone), and of course the ! is to initiate the dial. Once you get the Attached message, just do your normal thing to logon. I normally need to send a break (right-Amiga B), followed by a few carriage returns to get the LAT prompt. -Dom

For Hayes compatible modems, the 'wait for second dial tone' character is "W". Also, put a "#" after the last digit of the DTN number to make it complete the call immediately - otherwise there's a delay of several seconds.

thanks for your replies. i tried the following last night and it worked: in the atalk3 phone-list, in the phone-number field, i typed in: <phone-number>W<DTN>. when i select DIAL, it works fine. <phone-number> gets me the outside line; W causes the modem to dial <DTN> when it encounters the second dial tone. i wasn't sure, from what you guys wrote, WHEN i was supposed to type CTRL/B, etc., since atalk3 is not a command-line interface. but thanks anyway. we got there! ken quirici |
