3629.0. "discovering an old dusty soft again..." by PRSUD1::GADAVE () Thu Mar 29 1990 06:27

A friend of mine bought some months ago BBS software for his PC while travelling
accross US.
He realized when he came back to France, he got an AMIGA version (the stuff is
from Microsystems software and is names BBS-PC !!).

So he gave it to me, I put it in a box and forgot it.

I found it again when trying to find some blank floppies in my boxes.

The documentation is not very easy to read (for me as I'm not very familiar with
communication purposes).

I own an old 300-1200 bauds modem (without any documentation).
I live in France (European or Franch BBS?).

So If someone could explain in short what is BBS-PC used for?
Could I use it for communication with Amiga friends (vaxmail like..)
Could I use it for load operations ?

The DIR/title=BBS seems not very useful, so I impatient to hear from you
BBS gurus.

Thanx

BBS-PC is Electronic Bulletin Board Software for Personal Computers. I don't
know what other hardware it runs on, but I think it got it's start on IBM
PCs, and was then ported to the Amiga.

You can start a BBS with it, but most people in the US wouldn't pay much
attention to a 300/1200 BBS (just about everything I use has Courier HSTs
or similar). This would let all your friends log in, and leave notes for
you, or for each other, or whatever. They should also be able to upload
and download from your system. It will tie up your machine pretty solidly,
so expect to dedicate a machine to it.

Running a BBS is a lot of work, and there's no monetary reward (normally,
that is). It can be very rewarding otherwise, but not many people manage
to make it through the first year (I didn't - mine lasted about 6 months).

About the name - I think the Amiga is a great Personal Computer, so BBS-PC
is a perfectly appropriate product name for it.
