I know it's called "IT CAME FROM THE DESERT". I did'nt think that would
fit into the description without chopping some letters off so I was
planning to put the title at the top of the note but as you so kindly
pointed out I forgot. Sorry about the confusion but this night shift
does wierd things to my brain.

re: the other ANT movies I believe the classic is called "THEM"
I wonder if any more related movie conversions are planned, after all
there were a lot of giant insect movies, why just limit it to ants.
Has anybody been able to escape from the hospital? Maybe it's
just me, but my impression from the manual was that you just go out
the main doors on the first floor. But they won't open. Hints?

p.s. anybody send for the IT CAME FROM THE DESERT II: "ANT HEADS"?
the ad says "make your reservations now for the first ever double
creature feature".

| I've escaped from the hospital once.
You have to go to the ground floor to escape. This can be done by going
down the stairs or the lift. If you are on foot you get overwhelmed on
the ground floor so use a wheelchair if possible. When you come to the
front door's there are two security guards but you simply have to go
in between them to escape.
Q: Has anyone managed to win in a razor fight ???????
I have'nt seen any notes mentioning this game but as access times are
so long here in Scotland I have'nt really got the time to have a good
look.
ANT MOVIES
If I remember correctly, Clint Eastwood play's a fighter pilot in
"THEM"

| No wonder I always get caught on the first floor. I look for a
wheel-chair next time. I won the knife fight once, but it was more
luck than anything else. I just waited until [whatever his name is]
lunged at me then I blocked his thrust and stabbed. FWIW.

| My son got this game for Christmas and loves it. We ordered ICFTD II
right after Christmas. Around the last week in February my son called
Cinemaware to find out the status of our order. He was told that it
wasn't ready yet and would begin shipping the end of the month.
Unfortunately, he didn't have the rep clarify which month. We're still
waiting.
He's finished the game and can answer most any question about it. I'll
act as go-between since I know very little about it myself.

| The knife fight is easy if you do a sort of circular rotation of the
joystick, it's the long sweeping jabs that work. Otherwise he gets
too close and can do a lot of damage quickly.
I've gotten to the main door on first floor with a wheelchair, but
with or without the wheelchair haven't been able to get the door
to open. Will try running between the security guards.

| Are you dudes a bunch of mutated wimps or what? Just attack ferociously
in the knife fight and you'll be sure to win. It's hard to get out of the hospital but go right to get to the main
doors and not left although this appears more difficult at first. The
ant nest is best reached by plane with a desert landing below mine 3.
Turn left at the airport and then turn diagionaly left over the next
farm. Time your landing well and you might make it in; its pretty
difficult but a lot of fun. Nice game huh?!

| You can escape the hospital by getting close to the guards, then
turn and run -- getting them to chase you. I run to the nearest
bed and jump in until they leave. The guards will then start
moving through the hospital looking for you. That leaves the
front doors unguarded.
I can get into the nest, locate the queen but when I release the
bomb, I never have time to escape. It's a great game...

Rumours have surfaced over the past five years that giant ants have been
spotted in the mountains surrounding Lizard Breath, but most people have
written them off as delayed hysteria. These days the local inhabitants are more
concerned with the "big bucks" that the governments Atomic Testing Program is
pumping into the local economy. Even the strange stories that have surfaced
about Melville Hospital had been ignored in the rush to embrace an all atomic
future, but that was until Brick Nash stole a truck load of plutonium
detonators and headed for Dr Wells deserted laboratory...
Is the nightmare beginning again? Is it safe to go submarine watching in
the desert? And why do some poople around town get this funny look in their
eyes when you mention candy bars? Find ouy in "ANTHEADS" It Came From The

3600.12 | Hard Drive Problems | NITMOI::WITHERS | Another Hallmark Moment. -Al Bundy | Thu Jul 26 1990 11:20 | 15 |
| Hello all! I'm having trouble installing "It Came From The Desert" onto
the harddrive of my A2000. I get a guru whenever I try to run it from the
harddrive. I even got a guru attempting to run it from the disks they give
with the harddrive turned on. I have to turn the harddrive off and boot
cold from floppies to get it to work.
My thought is that maybe I have too little memory with the harddrive up. It
is a 150Mg CDC Wren III harddrive broken into 5 partitions. The drive is SCSI
and is controlled by an A2090. Can anyone who is still playing this game
from a harddrive tell me what an AVAIL reads before running it?
Has anyone else had problems with installing it on a harddrive on a 1Meg
A2000?

3600.13 | I had success with thiss | HPSCAD::GATULIS | Frank Gatulis 297-6770 | Thu Jul 26 1990 13:48 | 22 |
|
I don't have it on my hard drive at the moment but I used to run it
that way. Here's what experienced (A2000, 5meg, old Agnus).
1. I had it set up to run from an ICON. Before I could click on that
ICON I had to shut down every other window and task or it would
GURU. After doing this, I could run the game reliably and
repeatably.
2. Once started, I know of no way to get back to the system. Re-boot
was my standard exit sequence!
It's well worth the effort of putting it on hard disk if your're gonna
spend any time at this game. I couldn't stand it from floppy due to
the speed of loading all the scenes.
I Quarterbacked the program after getting it running on hard disk so
if you have difficulty getting it running I can go back and tell you
exactly how I did it.

3600.14 | A couple of possibilities | LODGE::LEN | David M. Len | Thu Jul 26 1990 14:20 | 13 |
| I have an auto mounting hard drive, and I use to have problems with
certain games. Initially the buffers for the drive could be either
fast or chip, when I changed it to request only fast, my problems ended
(I have a 2MB expansion board).
I also reccomend shuting down any background programs before you start.
I run Qmouse and if I left it running when I started Desert, I would get
trashed graphics from time to time. Other than this Qmouse interaction,
I have had no problem running Desert from my hard drive.
From what I remember of the installation instructions, you would still
need to use the original floppy for the program startup. But you can
copy the startup file to the hard drive and edit it to work from there.

3600.15 | got it and don't got it | NITMOI::WITHERS | Another Hallmark Moment. -Al Bundy | Fri Jul 27 1990 13:32 | 16 |
| Well.. it did seem to be memory. I set up a user-selected startup-sequence
on the drive and selected a startup with nothing but the boot partition. I
then mounted the games partition and ran it fine ... until ...
viturally all the way thru the game (one session) the game guru'ed (i don't
have the exact number here). It was after entering the situation map phase,
after the town had been on alert. Anyone see anything like this? Could it
be that I had barely enough memory to run it and this section (near the end)
tried for more that it couldn't get? What setting on "BufMemType" in the
MountList specifies Fast Mem Only?
I'd have been more upset except that everyone in the town was dead and there
were at lease three active ant infestations :-) Anyone play the sequel, yet?
is it as good?

| It could be. The version I have is real touchy about what runs
before it - as if having it run from the hard disk was tossed
in at the last minute. I have the impression that since it
doesn't let you exit back to the workbench, it just takes
over the system and assumes all memory is ok to use.
Keep as little as possible in chip memory.
I have the sequel, it's the same game with a couple twists. Not too
bad for the price, particularly if you like hunting ants. It does
seem to be a little better with the harddisk support.

3600.17 | Thanx for the hints, Anyone tried RAM: | HPSRAD::BOAEN | | Mon Sep 30 1991 01:07 | 30 |
| Hi, Just got a copy of IT.. and also IT..II. System Eyes has
IT on sale for $25 (while they last). and I got them to throw in
part II for an additonal $10 by bying both at once.
I think the preceeding notes have given me the Clue for my
hard drive problems (Runs fine till in the hospital, then gurus
as soon as I get out of bed.) I'm going to build a boot WB that
just mounts the hard drive, but doesn't really start up Snap,
Gomf,Arexx,... It'll be a couple of weeks till I can get to it, but
the extra speed will be worth it. Has anyone tried running from RAM:
or RAD: ?? I've got 4Meg fast RAM, so If I can use it, it should
really speed things up.
Hmm, think I'll just try copying the hard drive desert
directory to RAM: and tell the startup sequence to go from there.
Has anyone had anyluck running without Desert1: in DF0: on a hard drive
system?
I really like this type of game IT and Rocket Ranger are
the only games I've really gotten into. I don't have arcade reflexes,
so the strategic thinking appeals to me. Does anyone know of other
games with similar flavors to these? Silent Service is #3 on my list,
and again it's got similar interactive strategy. I haven't gotten too
enthusiastic about 'dungeon' type games, they seem to take lots and
lots of patience to memorize everything. The pace seems better on
CinemaWare's stuff. BTW, I heard a rumor CinemaWare went under.
Anything to it?? Given the quality of these games, I hope the
rumor's false.
