I'm guilty of *not* announcing these two (sorry, but it was late and it
didn't seem worthy of a new note; I'm a reply kinda guy):
CALPAL.ZOO AREXX based calendar utility
X-MEN.LZH Demo; found on Steve "VirusX" Tibbetts BBS, so I
				figured it was safe...
The following plus MEMGUARD and ? were just announced by Ed in a recent
note, or reply to an UPLOAD titled note, with the real descriptions:
CHALLENGE.LZH Shanghai-style game (TILES is another)
CHALLENGE.TXT The ReadMe from same
HAMES.LZH A collection of four utilities

I was trying to use this program, and although I do have Arexx, the

Does anyone know how I can get this??

    Thanks.

| | I had a problem with calpal until I edited then "rx" the "setuprexxlibs"
script. Calpal is pretty neat as far as PD programs go but its response
    is very slow.
I have been using WhoWhatWhenWhere as a desktop calendar, scheduler,
phone book, alarm clock, etc... WWWW is kind of cumbersome but does
what it is supposed to do. It came with a demo, I'll see if it is
    legal to upload it.

| 3594.12 | WBscreen8.ZOO Uploaded to TAPE:: | ENOVAX::BARRETT | Lean, Green, and on the screen | Fri Mar 30 1990 22:48 | 31 |
| | Getting tired of the look of your Workbench? I've been running with an
8 color workbench for quit awhile now. I've chosen colors that function
in normal 4 color mode and in the enhanced 8 color mode (the later
looking much better). I've also re-drawn many of my Icons -- inspired
by the EDS_ICONS and MORE_ICONS submissions, but taking them a step
further by relocating them in a "NeXT-like" platform and raising the
Icon's name into the icon itself. The Icons, the Bitplanes program, and
sample screen IFF files (for the 8 color screen and the old 4 color
one) are all included in the file:
    		TAPE::USER2:[UPLOAD]WBSCREEN8.ZOO
The icons are all usable on non-8color systems as well. The 8 color
mode takes very little additional memory, and I've never been hit by a
GURU because of using it (although dragging old non-8 color icons sometimes
may not be visible during motion).
    To Use:
Type "Bitplanes 3" to enter 8 color mode, "Bitplanes 2" to exit.
You may have to "ReDraw" (by selecting the Workbench pulldown menu
option) the screen before you'll see the 8 colors. If you put it in
your startup sequence, it should go AFTER your LOADWB. If you use
C-SHOW in your startup, you must terminate it before using Bitplanes.
My motivation for doing this came came from a friend of mine that
works for Apple that comes over once in a while. I got tired of being
embarrased by the "cartoon-like" look of the original Workbench.
I've very happy with my new look and would appreciate any comments or
    enhancements that you may have.

| | Re: .17
Steve,
TAPE:: is a great resource, much appreciated by many Amigaphiles around the
world, as recorded elsewhere in this conference.
I admit I thought things were running off the tracks when the [UPLOAD] directory
seemed to become more than an intermediate transfer area for stuff being loaded
elsewhere in TAPE::, and I'm glad to see it's going to get organised. However,
while I can't offer help with the actual reorg, I'd like to make a couple of
comments as a user.
Finding out about TAPE:: is pretty much a word-of-mouth thing... a mate tells
you about it, or tells you about this conference and you see TAPE:: mentioned.
The first problem comes when you start looking around. Although there are some
'help' files in the top directories which provide some info on what's in TAPE::,
many of them are badly out of date. I'd like to see a reorg include a single
document which described what's on TAPE::, how the info is organised, how to
copy it, where to upload new stuff, who looks after the system (mail addresses,
etc), ... Perhaps this document should be read-only to all users, modifiable
by the abovementioned system owners. Obviously, it would need to be in place
and have a name so that any new users could not help but stumble across it.
So, having said that, now I'd like to propose a new note which allowed some
proposals for how the info on TAPE:: be reorganised to be posted and discussed.
As we've all seen notes run wild, I'd suggest a very clearly defined time period
for posting of proposals and discussion, after which whoever volunteers to help
you do the reorg can do it with the benefit of some pre-cooked ideas. I'll even
start the note off!.
regards,
Simon.

A2091PAT.ZOO;1 3 ! A2091 Location Zero Patch
BangZero version 1.0
This utility is in response to a request from Merical's (Mike Miller + Dave
Peeples) for a way to solve an apparent problem with MSS software used in
conjunction with the A-2091 controller card. Evidently MSS uses memory
location 0 for some purpose, and expects to find a zero there. The 2091
apparently sticks a 1 in there, which causes the MSS code to crash.
This utility, as its name implies, bangs a zero into the LONGWORD beginning
at location 0. Put it into your startup-sequence if you have a 2091. It
should probably be one of the first things run in your startup-sequence. It
definitely should precede things like MemWatch or Gomf, if you run those.

SETFONT27.LZH;1 26 ! Dave Haynie's SetFont V2.7
SetFont V2.7 is a public domain program designed to allow the system
font of the Amiga to be changed in various different ways. The main bug fix
over V2.5 or V2.6 is a theoretically correct handling of resident vs. disk
fonts. At least, it seems to work correclty this time around. Please feel free

please let me know about them.

SHOWCARDS.LZH;1 13 ! A2000 Expansion Bus "Sniffer"
ShowCards v1.0 01/09/90
ShowCards is a utility which examines each device on the expansion bus and
returns information which _may_ be of use in building a CardRom list for
Dave Haynie's SetCPU 1.5 (at least that's what I tried to do). At minimum,
it should be useful for identifying the cards installed on a given machine
without having to go under the hood. ShowCards examines each card on the
expansion bus (starting at the CPU slot on a 2000 and working towards the
power LED). Presently, SetCard recognizes a limited number of expansion
cards by name. If you send EMAIL showing a dump from ShowCards which
identifies unknown cards by name, I can expand the list of recognized
cards. ShowCards is based on an example in Appendix G of the Amiga
Hardware manual. Please report any bugs. ShowCards is freely
redistributable and offered 'as-is', etc, etc, etc!

Since the A2091 and the A590 are clones, perhaps the A590 solution to
what I think was the same problem would work. I believe it was Dave
Haynie that pointed out that the default "version number" that is
placed on each FFS partition was the culprit. The solution is to use
the hard disk toolbox to change the boot partition's file system
    version number (to ANYthing).

    An update to .21 at:
                       CRISTA""::AMIGA:SHOWCARDS14.LZH
    From the docs:
ShowCARDs version 1.40, 1990 by Robert Wilcox 8/30/90
ShowCARDs may be freely distributed as long as only a small (if any)
charge is made to cover costs. The executable file is not to be
altered. I reserve the right to limit the distribution of any later
version of ShowCARDs. Attempts by third parties to limit or redefine this
  distribution are null and void.
This software is provided "as is". Although every effort has been
made to have it function in accord with this document, the author
shall not be responsible for problems users may experience with it.

  Description
ShowCARDs is a utility which is useful for identifying the Auto-Config
cards installed on an Amiga without having to go under the hood. ShowCARDs
examines each card on the expansion bus (starting at the CPU slot on a
A2000 and working left towards the power LED). Presently, ShowCARDs
identifies approximately 3 dozen expansion cards by manuafacturer and
product name. Certain products like the Spirit boards for the A1000, do
not use Auto-Config and thus are only indirectly detected in terms of the
presence of additional memory.
ShowCARDs displays information which _may_ be of use in building a
CardROMList for use with Dave Haynie's SetCPU. Although ShowCARDs
displays information for each card in the format required for a
CardROMList, the address space of expansion memory boards is added to the
system free memory list and I can see no advantage in the use of
CardROMList entrys for these expansion memory cards. Use of FastMemFirst
will favor the on-board 32-bit ram over the 16-bit variety in the case of
an A2630. It turns out that some cards and software drivers (the Supra
WordSynch for instance) automagically seek out 32-bit RAM and relocate the
ROM image there. Using the CARDROM option of SetCPU under these
circumstances actually caused a slight performance decrease (measurable
using DiskSpeed version 3.0).
If you send me MAIL showing a dump from ShowCARDs and you identify any
unknown cards, I can expand the list of recognized cards. Thanks to
PeopleLinks NES*BILL and STEVEX for assistance in testing version 1.40.

    PowerPlatform Release 1.0
    =========================
At first glance PowerPlatform may appear to be just another directory
utility program. Typically a directory utility program will have one or
more directory windows and a bunch of gadgets to help you move around
the directory tree. It would also have an array of function buttons
that enable you to do such things as copy, delete and rename files.
    PowerPlatform has all these features.
Typically a directory utility will give you the ability to define some
of these function buttons yourself. For example it might allow you to
change the Edit function button to invoke the editor of your choice.
    PowerPlatform has this feature too.
But typically directory utilities don't give you control over much
else. PowerPlatform does. PowerPlatform has only two built in functions.
For example it does not have it's own copy function. This may seem
strange at first but using an ARexx EXEC you define the PowerPlatform
functions. You define the name of the button, where it goes on the
screen and more importantly what it does. You can run any AmigaDOS
command, CLI program, WorkBench program or ARexx EXEC from within
    PowerPlatform.

    SCREENX22.ARC 33 ! Clock/Memgauge/Screen Flipper|Grabber
    ScreenX - By Steve Tibbett.
ScreenX is a program designed to be put into your Startup sequence. It
provides a number of things that are already available in different
packages, along with a couple of it's own twists.
1: Provide a small clock/memory counter on the Workbench Screen,
which will take very little processor time yet be accurate.

2: Provide a means to recover those screens that are "Lost" behind
those stupid programs that don't bother to put Depth gadgets on
       their screens. IE, Chessmaster.

3: Provide an easy way to save a screen to an IFF file (Easier than
"Flip the screen you want to the front within 10 seconds" anyway).

JMODEM.LZH 46 ! JMODEM File Transfer Protocol, Amiga Version 1.0
Based on original implementation version 1.20 by Richard B. Johnson for IBM PC
compatibles. Amiga port made by Kenneth Osterberg, released into public domain
June 10, 1989. The program is implemented as an "external protocol", as is
customary in the IBM-PC world. This has many advantages, but limits its usage
until programs appear which can handle this feature in an efficient way.
Introduction to JMODEM: If you want exact information about Jmodem you have to
get the original documents included in the JMODEM package for PC compatibles. I
give you only a quick overview of its features and shortcomings.
  Features:
o 16-bit CRC for efficient error detection
o File size maintained, no "extra" characters as with Xmodem
o A limited form of automatic data compression
o Rapid syncronization, usually only 1 or 2 bytes needed for
         handshaking
o Variable length transmission blocks, transfer starts with small
blocks, but grow if few line errors occur.
o There is no minimum size for transmission blocks, if 2 characters
remain to be sent, 2 characters are indeed sent (+ block header),
not 128 as with Xmodem or Ymodem
o Aborted files are saved, 0 length files are automatically deleted
o Files being overwritten are renamed by appending ".old" to their
         file name, rather than deleted
  Shortcomings:
o File name, size and modification date is not transferred, as in
         Ymodem, Zmodem, Megalink etc.
o The protocol requires acknowledge of every block, thus decreasing
efficiency. This may not be a shortcoming, it increases reliability
in case the line is suddenly dropped without warning. Protocols like
Zmodem and Megalink do not, however, require receiver acknowledge of
         all blocks.
o XON/XOFF characters are not escaped. This is even more serious as
the block sizes are large, creating problems with slow disk drives
and high transmission speeds. This should not be a problem under
         9600 baud, though.
  Final notes:
This program has been thoroughly tested running JMODEM 1.20 on a Sidecar, using
a "null" modem cable between the Amiga and a PC serial card on the Sidecar. If
you find any problems or have anything to comment concerning the program or its
usage with existing or future communications programs, please contact me on the

realistic three dimensional pictures of objects can be created
by tracing the paths of rays of light through a scene. The
unique features of C-Light include:
    * Easy creation of animations in the ANIM standard format
    * Stereoscopic 3D images that jump out of the screen using
          X-Specs 3D glasses!
    *  Reflecting surfaces (mirrors).
    *  Shadows.
    * Simple and quick scene creation using a powerful editor that lets you
          visually place objects.
    * Allows creation of scenes with up to 170 objects (spheres, cylinders
and cubes) each of which can be sized, rotated and located
          independently in all three dimensions.
    * Allows any number of light sources (up to object limit
of 170) with variable intensity and adjustable ambient light.
    * Supports overscanned and interlaced-overscan images as well as
320 by 200 and 320 by 400 images, all in the standard IFF
          format.
    * Smoothly shaded objects with the color set selectable out of
          4096 possible colors.
    * Movable viewpoint (the observers eye.)
    * Easy editing of scenes both during and after creation.
    * Full Intuition interface for ease of use.
    *  Multitasking.

LHARC V1.21 - Just a new version
 -Version 1.21 08-Aug-1990
No new feature in this version, just a few bug fixes
-Read-from-location-zero bug eliminated: now Lharc works even if
memory location zero (which usually contains a 0) as been altered.
-Now Lharc cretes archives with the correct name even if the part
of the path name referring to the device contains a period.
-It as been reported that Lharc 1.20 sometimes crashed while
reading corrupted archives: I could not reproduce the problem,
but it should be fixed in this version

| 3594.34 | Amiga Curses | WELSWS::FINNIS |  | Tue Oct 16 1990 12:11 | 55 |
| | For all you unix fans I am about to upload a curses package

    	CURSES.LZH  ( tape::user2:[upload])

            AMIGA CURSES PACKAGE
            ====================
Author : Simon John Raybould ([email protected])
Date : 10th June 1990
This package is mainly aimed at people who wish to port screen based UN*X
applications to the Amiga. I have written a brief documentation file but I
assume that such people have access to full curses documentation. I have no
intention of re-writing the Curses documentation as this would be of little
or no use to people because they would still use their own.
I hope this is the package people have been waiting for on the Amiga
and would like to make this the best PD curses package available. So please
report bugs to me. When I am happy with the code I may release the source
into the public domain, I'm not sure yet!!
To use this, include curses.h at the top of your code instead of stdio.h
(curses.h will include stdio.h). Compile as normal and when linking, link in
the library 'curses.lib'. 'curses.h' should be installed in the same
directory as 'stdio.h' (INCLUDE:) with lattice V5. 'curses.lib' should be
in the same directory as 'lc.lib' or 'c.lib' (LIB:) with lattice V5.
    NOTE
    ====
The library uses full 32 bit addressing so with Lattice remember to
compile with the -b0 switch !!!!
There is one example provided called colour. This shows how to print text
in different colours. The main thing shown here though is how to compile and
link curses into a piece of C code. You may copy and ammend the Makefile
provided with the example to suit your own code.
As a test, I have compiled Omega with this package because it uses many
windows and has a very complicated refresh sequence. It seems to work fine
and I may also distribute the compiled binary for that as well.
I have tested this code with Lattice V5.02, V5.04, V5.05 and all seems
fine. I have not tested with Aztec as I don't have a copy.
Any bugs e.t.c. email to '[email protected]'
Cheers,
       Sie

| | re: the following

I lost the original config file so I included my, rather large, own.
The program came from one of the >370 fish disks. I have been using
it for a week or so in place of "MyMenu". It functions great(nice to
have paths in the menu commands). MyMenu installs in the workbench
menu line whereas ParM creates its own window. I like the way MyMenu
"installs itself" better but I love the versatility of ParM.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

ParM stands for Parametrable Menu.
ParM allow you to build your own menus in order to run all the programs you
can have on one ore more disks. This is very usefull for hard disk owners
which have programs deeply enclosed in subdirectories. With ParM, you can
run them without going through directories under either WorkBench or CLI.
With ParM, you can start programs in either WorkBench or CLI mode. The
advantage of WorkBench mode is that the default directory of the program
you run is the one in which the program file is. In the other hand, you
can't leave ParM when workbench processes are running.
Installation:
Put ParM with its icon wherever you want, and just put the default
config file "ParM.cfg" in S: if you use it. If you don't, you'll have
to specify the config file in the command line or in the tool types of
the icon, otherwise, you will have to cancel the requester and won't
	have any menus.
See doc file for more info

readable. We put our work in making english language comments, but it
isn't allways easy, so be fair with us.

Does anyone know if the Psygnosis Demo that is on tape is from
Psygnosis, or is it some sort of hacker demo with pictures from intros
    to Psygnosis games?

|  | I just put turrdemo.lzh in tape::user2:[upload].  This is an excellent
demo of the game Turrican. Really nice and playable for one huge level
out of the 13 which normally come with the game. This is the kind of
demo that makes you want to buy the game.

 |
| 3594.42 | * support for 2.0 users | ELMST::MCAFEE | Steve McAfee | Tue Nov 06 1990 20:16 | 15 |
|  |     One more goodie on tape::user2:[upload].  starburst.lzh contains
a TINY program which flips a bit in the 2.0 dos.library. This
was proscribed by Randell Jessup of CBM. It enables * wildcard
support!!! You cannot however use an asterisk by itself as the
    old CON meaning still applies.

    e.g.

1> copy * ram: ; does not work uses old meaning
    1> copy st*bur* ram: ; does work

Fine with me, I don't think I ever use the wildcard by itself anyhow.
Needless to say this only works with 2.0.

|  |     I just put cpublit.lzh in tape::amiga:[upload].  This came over
USENET a few days ago and works GREAT. It causes to use the CPU
to scroll bitmaps when its not busy (rather than the blitter).
This is really only useful for people who have 68020 and 68030 systems.
It's got a number of options.

Text on my 25Mhz 3000 scrolls VERY noticebly faster. Also, there
is none of the funny garbage that you seen when the blitter scrolls
colored text in a console window.
