3572.0. "Zork Zero - A new Challange; A new Beginning!" by NZOV01::MCKENZIE (Stop Pollution; Leave a Legacy) Sat Mar 10 1990 22:58
Time to review the latest text adventure craze for all you travellers
from the Great underground Empire...
ZORK ZERO THE REVENGE OF MEGABOZ has to be one of the most interesting
and addictive text based adventure games around. Marketed by Infocom
it combines classic Zork puzzles with graphics in the true style
of the Great Underground Empire.
The Scene: King Of the GUE, Dimwit Flathead has for
years spent up large on some of the most outlandish whimsical projects
ever conceived in the minds of people everywhere, earning him the name
of "Lord Dimwit Flathead the excessive". Projects included the building
of the #3 Flood control Dam, The 400 story Frobozz Inc building and
the Castle itself. But Dimwit goes too far when he builds a 9 Bloit
high statue of himself in Fublio Valley...the favourite meditation spot
of Megaboz, a local wizard. MegaBoz appears at a royal banquet and
casts a curse over the whole Flathead Family and the entire Realm.
When he leaves, a huge cauldron appears in the banquet hall and soon
afterwards, Flathead and his eleven brothers and sisters perish in
mysterious circumstances. The court magicians manage to place a stay
of 94 years on the curse to prevent further destruction of the GUE and
prior to his death, Dimwit issues a proclamation: Whomsoever can break
the curse will receive have the land and wealth of the Great
Underground Empire.
94 years later, when all have abandoned the empire, it is up to you
to break the curse. Fortunately for you, an ancestor of yours managed
to find a scrap of parchment which had fallen from the pocket of
Megaboz on that fateful day. And so you begin a quest, which will take
you to the four corners of the Empire, in search of the items you need.
Inside the packaging is:
A scrap of parchment
A blue print
a calender detailing the lives of the 12 flatheads
Game instructions
The game features a fairly intelligent parser, auto mapping of
individual areas of the empire, full hints (for those that get really
stuck), auto score notification, mind-boggling puzzles and some of the
most interesting and funny scenes and characters you are ever likely
to find...
All in all, if you enjoy a good adventure game with plenty of
opportunity to exercise the grey matter, you will LOVE Zork Zero.
Rating: 9 out of ten.
For those who have played earlier versions of Zork or the DEC
equivilant DUNGEON, dont confuse this with other versions. Its entirely
different! New scenes, characters and puzzles with just a hint of
some of the old sites, for nostalgia's sake.
If anyone is interested, I have a complete map of the game in
Postscript format. I would be happy to post this to anyone who
wants it. WARNING: The map is a BIG SPOILER...
Cheers
Phil
