3550.0. "A1000 - Wedge lookalike - Spirit inboard - RD52" by PEEVAX::GIFFORD (My dunny was kicked down by chooks!) Mon Mar 05 1990 17:27
G'day from down-under (or up-over),
I have an A1000 with a spirit inboard with 1mb on it - total memory 1.5mb...
I have an Australian equivilent of a wedge - a slap-on-the-side box with
a cable going to a little board with an I*M disk controller card on it
leading to a RD52!
The RD52 is good - at least it works in my GPX.
I have tried a couple of different disk controllers....
The problem is that the disk drive does not 'work' - it doesn't twitch at all.
I have not at this stage installed the patch to link the four PAL's together,
(but will soon).
If I remove power to the controller, or remove the controller I get an effect!
If I remove power, the low-level formatter (no source available) notices this.
If I power up the A1000 with the controller card removed, the amiga notices -
Guru's after loading Kickstart.
From this I can surmise that...
The drive is good.
The connection to the disk controller is good'ish!
The controller card has been changed with a known good controller (st11-m), with
EXACTLY the same results, so I presume my controller is good.
Would the noise from the un-tied to ground PAL's cause this?
Has anyone a similar config?
The frustration factor is getting extremely high now......
BTW I have checked the powere to the drive and the controller and this is good.
(Last thought - has any one got a good explanation of the st506 interface)
Regards
Stan (With a lot less hair than this time last month.....)

| G'day
You should be able to feel the smile anywhere in the world....
The problem was the card the AT controller plugs into - it was dead, and
the company replaced Free of charge.
I am now an extremely happy person with a 20mb and a 13mb partitions that
work very well.
Thanx for all the helpfull mail.
Regards
Stan Gifford.
Now with A1000 + 2mb memory 2 floppys and *HARD DISK*
